Hi Warren
Haven't used the NUVI myself but I noticed a post about this issue earlier - check out post 85955.

Hi Warren
I run a Nuvi 660, with CN 2011, Shonky and T4A Pro, and Contours Aust.
You can buy a $10 dvd with Shonky and Contour Aust and a lot of other goodies from here.
With Contour Aust, it is an overlay, that gives you the contour lines over CN 2011. Shonky has maps with contours as well.
A good site for Nuvi owners is Nuvi Tips and Tricks

Hi
I have just checked out the link to the dvd, as I haven't used it for a while, it's now 2 x dvd and the cost is $15.
Cheers

The Garmin Topo map is brilliant, it shows a lot more detail than CN 2011, it will need to be installed to a 4gb Micro card, I state 4gb because there won't be much space left on a 2gb if you want other maps like Shonky and T4A.

For bushwalking Garmin Topo Aus V.2 is close to useless.

Shonky is OK for car nav though it's dated and 1:250,000. Natmap 1:100,000 still hasn't been fixed.

The Garmin V2 topo is useless. Waste of money. I sent mine back for a refund it was so hopeless.

Not a big fan of many of Garmin's policies wrt map data but Garmin Topo Australia & NZ V3 is a very good product, depending on your needs. As far as I'm aware there is no such thing as 'V2'. They skipped from V1 to V3 so if you are looking for the latest Garmin Aust Topo that's what you should search and ask for.

From what I have read very few people were happy with Garmin Topo Australia V1 - far too many errors and omissions, but V3 is MUCH better and up there with the best available (they all have their pros and cons). Avoid any retailer trying to offload V1 - unless you are getting it for a song.

Have a look here for some brief, objective comments and screenshots of different map products.
GPS Australia User Comments

I've posted links to half-price V3 on SD card on other threads in the past couple of days.

Note - Garmin claims V3 to be routable, ie has turn by turn voice navigation (unlike Shonky and others), if that's what you need. I can't confirm same, as my handheld doesn't have that capability (as far as I'm aware).

Does V3 show the Walker Crossing track from Birdsville track to Innaminka?

I have the Garmin Topo map that I use in both a GPS62s and a Nuvi 1690 , works great. Just have to remember to go into settings and uncheck the loaded map in the Nuvi, so that the topo works.

Hi TR. So are you saying that you can swap the Topo SD card between devices and it works, or do you have two copies? Interested because Garmin used to have locking on their maps. Might even consider getting a NUVI for the car if they have done away with that bit of gouging.

Thanks

yeah mate, i was surprised that it worked too, but yes, I swap the mini SD card between the devices, So that the Nuvi stays on the dash, and I have the handheld for outside the vehicle.

Have just been looking at Garmin Topo again in Mapsource.

A road is marked as going to the top of Bogong, and other tracks in the area are marked as roads. Lesser but still significant peaks in the area aren't marked.

Thredbo village isn't marked. I could go on.

And IIRC autorouting doesn't work on tracks.

It's a pity HEMA maps are raster rather than vector which is what Garmin requires. If I were starting over and serious about good topo maps I'd opt for the HEMA Navigator.

Hi
One thought, if you want to run vector and raster, you could do what I did, run the Nuvi with vector maps as a street navigator, and run a cheap generic Chinese unit (under $100 from Deal Extreme), and run Ozi Exp CE on it, along side, with your raster maps (Hema, Westprint, Spatial Vison & Meridian etc.). You then have the best of both worlds.
