Emergency services have launched a search and rescue operation after a Swiss tourist activated an emergency beacon in Western Australia's remote Pilbara.

The Search and Rescue Co-ordination Centre in Canberra has sent a plane from Perth to drop off a radio to the man who is believed to be stranded on the Talawana Track, 1,000 kilometres east of Karratha.

It is believed the man is travelling in a campervan from Perth to Cairns.

Police hope to be able to find out the man's condition once they have established communications with him.

Perhaps there's a shortage of radios in the area. Fancy sending a plane out all the way from Perth.
