ABC News
Emergency
services have launched a search and rescue operation after a Swiss tourist activated an emergency
beacon in Western Australia's remote
Pilbara.
The Search and Rescue Co-ordination Centre in
Canberra has sent a plane from
Perth to drop off a radio to the man who is believed to be stranded on the Talawana Track, 1,000 kilometres east of
Karratha.
It is believed the man is travelling in a campervan from
Perth to
Cairns.
Police hope to be able to find out the man's condition once they have established communications with him.

Perhaps there's a shortage of radios in the area. Fancy sending a plane out all the way from
Perth.

Must have been a bit wet out there Al as I can't for the life of me think of anywhere sandy enough to get bogged except maybe the little twist around the claypans about 13 km east of the Canning. Hope he wasn't driving a Hi-ace van in "Wicked" livery. Why is it always the Swiss (& Germans lol)?
Thank god it wasn't summer and he had an EPIRB.
Cheers Mick

Gidday
Sure must be wet. ABC news has just reported a helicopter has been sent to get him and will take him to Telfer. It seems he was a short of supplies and couldn't wait till a car could get there with help to dig him out. Big bills looming for somebody!
Cheers

....."He says the tourist appears to be calm despite having only one day's supply of food and water"
I know there's plenty of water around however it's a bit silly still only having enough supplies for one day.

Alan,
Re the aircraft from
Perth.
The Rescue Coordination Centre in
Canberra is part of AMSA (Australian Maritime Safety Authority) and it operates a number of Dornier aircraft from bases at
Darwin,
Perth,
Cairns &
Melbourne, which are set up to carry out these type of drops or responses with trained crew (although most taskings are over water).
That's why an aircraft would come from
Perth.
Regards,
Jim
