I have been searching the threads learning what I can about GPS and bought the book on vehicle gps from the exploroz store, which i am reading. It occurs to me that an important item for back up if no other purpose is detailed paper maps. Which ones do other members carry and use? For camping in the bush mostly.

Hi IdahOz, I use GPS to know where I am and to guide me but paper maps to plan where I am going and what's around me.

Well I carry the Hema ring-bound "Easy Read Road & 4WD Atlas" always in the vehicle. It covers the whole of Australia, well indexed, and is particularly useful if I get into conversation with another traveller re areas in Australia.
Then I carry specific area maps related to the current trip. Mostly Hema. Over time I have collected quite a few but do not wish to carry all of them with me at all times.
I also do not hesitate to mark-up these maps or write notations on them.

Cheers

Yep - the GPS is not much use for trip planning - we do that mostly via our Hema Easy Read Road and 4WD Atlas - widely available - was about $36 for the 8th edition - quite a big format book packed with lots of Hema maps and a 4WD section at the back. Covers virtually all of our needs - the odd special paper map could be bought for extra detail if you have a special place in mind..... in our case though, various topo maps among the 100 or so digi maps on the Hema 5 cover that issue.

Gidday

i see from your profile you are WA based. are you a member of the RAC? They produce a good range of WA maps which are much cheaper for members . They are area specific (south-west , goldfiields, mid west etc) and I find them easier to carry and use than an atlas. Place I want always seems to be in the fold in the middle of the book!

Otherwise the big names Hema, westprint etc are widely available but not cheap if you decide to buy a few, But again i find specfic maps better than an Australia-wide atlas. I am not likely to be visiting the eastern States any time soon so I can't see much point in carrying around a big book.

you may find a dollar or so off maps if you hunt around online. There is a dedicated map shop in fremantle that has a huge range. Great place to go for a day dream for half an hour or so!

Cheers

Hi IdahOz,

We use Roads and Tracks of WA, here is a link to the book via Exploroz. Find it is very useful with the fishing spots, camping, dump points etc. We also use Hema maps via the specific region we want to travel to, but more often than not we use the above book. We also have the free camping south and north guides which are pretty good with details about overnight roadside stops etc. Hope this helps, cheers and safe travels.http://www.exploroz.com/Shop/Books/QPA/Roads___Tracks__WA__-_Spiral_Bound.aspx

Just checked, the link to the book above isn't working, but it's Roads and Tracks WA, you can get it just about anywhere, newsagencies, dymocks and exploroz.

Thanks. I have used the roads and tracks and it seems quite good. I have the free camping ones and they are great for roadside stops, but obviously not much detail for exploring.

Natmaps are also good. The Map Shop in Fremantle has every sort of map you could ever need.

Hi IdahOz,

The most accurate maps for camping in the bush are the Natmap series of maps 1:250k being the most popular.

Sometimes the roads and tracks are not quite correct or obsolete however for geographical features they beat hands down every other map/map book mentioned so far.

If you're in Perth, I usually get them from the Map shop in Hay street or Landgate in Midland. About $13 each.

Cheers

The best maps produced for people that go away from the major cities would be the ones produced for the emergency services,(Police and DEC) these detail the vast majority of tracks and roads in the bush.

The detail is incredible, all the way down to watering holes.

Suggest you make contact with your local DEC office and ask about acquiring an older version perhaps, they get updated often and oftenget chucked out.
