Towards the end of July I'm heading off to stay at
Boulia with friends for a couple of weeks.
My van is not suitable for western Qld. dirt roads, so I'm restricted to the bitumen.
As it always turns out I always seem to reach
Winton in the late afternoon, and though I know there is a caravan park there, I'd rather
camp out of town.
I've stayed at The
Long Waterhole [Camps Oz Wide 3 - #357] a couple of times, but as it's situated on alluvial mud, getting out is a problem if inclement weather occurs overnight, as I have found out.
Does anyone know of anywhere else near
Winton that has hard standing and easy access if it rains?
I'm not asking much am I [LOL]?

I had a look at that site whilst doing some shopping there a couple of years ago.
Too noisy and close to the pub.
Thanks but no thanks.

Just remembered...Pelican Point?
Pretty much blacksoil out of town everywhere. I'd
camp at
Long waterhole and not worry about rain as long as you
camp off the blacksoil

Just out of town and past the
Boulia T/o is a good spot on the left, it's dirt but if dry it'll be ok, also on the H/v bypass in town is a sealed truck bay at the
Jundah Rd turn off.

My vote is the truck
parking bay. It has some shade cloth cover as
well and I have seen people
camp overnight there too. You can walk to the
public toilets from there as
well.

Thankyou for your responses.
Yes, the truck stop looks good, recall seeing it some years ago, so I'll give it a go.
I just hope I don't share it with a road train of cows.
