Diesel to Gas

Hi guys
I was all set to get a Nissan Patrol and had waded through all that Toyota v Nissan - Petrol v Diesel - Auto v manual debates I had thought - and then when I walked into Nissan the other day they tell me I should be going for a Pathfinder cos of bigger torque.
So, my query is - seeing that these seem to be all diesel - can they ever be converted to gas?. Although there is no van to tow yet - it will be at least 22-24ft I would say.
Any thoughts on the vehicle choice or if diesels can be converted or not?

They are not all diesel - we have both late model petrol Pathfinder and Patrol in our family.
The Pathy is cute but Patrol is more capable though and both can go on gas
but Patrol does it better.
The compression ratio of most diesels causes pre-ignition so while conversion is possible it tends to be difficult expensive and not usually done , this is why a mixture of diesel & gas is main way this is done.

Hi Rob (Grubby),
I have diesel over gas on my turbo 1HD FT Landcruiser.
The gas ratio is only about 15% of the fuel mix when talking diesel. It is not either or but a combined fuel load.
The gas can be switched off at anytime and does not interfere with the normal settings on the diesel pump or injectors.
It is a separate system altogether but works in conjunction with the diesel.
If gas is unavailable then you run on diesel. No problems. I often run on diesel only especially when I am not towing.
Gas really only works on turbo-ed diesels as the small benefit gained on normally aspirated diesel vehicles does not warrant the cost.
However, if your vehicle is turbo-ed then the difference is startling. It is as good as a chip or a 3" exhaust.
My turbo used to suffer from serious turbo lag and when I had the injectors and pump done the difference was quite noticeable. When I had the gas done up it was heaps better again. Plenty of pickup and she performs better than a petrol cruiser on pickup and she pulls like a diesel should. Best of both worlds. Just can't get used to the smell or the roughness of a diesel engine when compared to a petrol six.
I still miss my 1FZ FE 80.

I should have added that because the amount of gas used is small, a much smaller gas tank is required. My tank fits up inside the chassis and only hangs down a small amount. The exhaust had to be rerouted to allow the gas tank to take its place.
My spare tyre is still fitted under the rear of the vehicle as it was when it the vehicle was made.

I am with Bruce. I have a GU Patrol that runs diesel / gas and the difference is astounding.
Towing is now enjoyable, and although many people want to do it for the economy, that is not really the aim of the exercise. What it will give you in increased power and torque to the tune of about 30% or so. It does also lower your overall per litre fuel cost considering the price of gas.
I run a 28 litre usable tank and go through about 1 1/2 tanks to the 125 litres of diesel. Not towing that gives me somewhere between 1200 - 1300 kms / tank. Towing takes it down to about 900 or so. I am running around 25 - 30% gas injection.
Mine paid for itself within the first year (although at the time was living in WA and got the additional rebate back)
Something to consider if you do go for a diesel.
