I was washing my vehicle at the car wash situated on Ferntree Gully Road just prior to the service station on the Springvale Road Intersection heading East, and noticed two of those Service Station type gas refil bottles that you once saw at all Service Stations.

Thought it a bit strange and wondered what they were doing there when I then spotted a sign on the back fence stating that it was $24.00 a refill for 9kg bottles.

The cheapest for same around me at the moment is Bunnings Swap and Go for approx $28.00.

Anyway, the owner of the car wash was there and a quick query resulted in him telling me that yes, refills 9kg bottles for $24.00 and fills them until the gas starts 'firing/squirting out of the bleeder valve like the old days. He also said that as you pay for 9Kg thats what you are entitled to.

So I finished the car wash, knicked home and went back with two empty 9Kg bottles, and watched him fill them while i washed SWMBO car.

Yep! he didn't turn the bleeder off until a full stream of LPG was purging.

I gave him a $50 note and he gave me a $5 note back. I queried whether he was short changing himself and he said Nup! you got two filled.

We then had a chit chat about Swap & Go compared to his 9kg fill, the details I don't dare repeat on a public forum for fear of having to do a 'nugget retraction' etc etc, however I can say he advised me to check the weight of his 9kg fill against that of a Swap & Go when I got home.

I'll just say there was 'a difference' which you would have to experience to appreciate.

So! if you want a decent deal on 9kg refills then this may be the place for you.

No! I don't have shares in the establishment or know the owner, and its the first time I have ever been in there. Though I will admit I have driven past it a zillion times.

I have always had my suspicions about swap and go but they do take out of date bottles.
Our local Bunnings are selling swam and go for $19.95 and our local Barbecues Gallor are selling refills for $19.95. Just tells you what a bit of competition will achieve.

Competition? There're not trying. My recent 9kg refill was at the BP servo at Weston (out of Cessnock,NSW) and was $16.

Kiwi, that's where I go all the time (also close to home). Cheapest I have seen pretty much anywhere.

I usually get 2 or 3 bottles filled at a time.

Stay away from swap & Go, they have always been underfilled IMHO.

Cheers.

Most advertise that a swap and go has 8.5 kg in it.

You are not supposed to fill any LPG tank FULL as there has to be room for expansion.

EG a car tank of 80 L usually only accepts a bit over 70L.

We used to remove the floats and bend them up a bit to ge more in.

Yes illegal I know but only did it on a Taxi at the start of a shift where it got burnt off pretty quickly
