The Cooktown boys only started grading the park roads last weekend. My guess is - mostly rugged.

Try this website reports as of 16 May 2011

http://131940.qld.gov.au/Home.aspx

Also read GRANT HID(NSW) thread (86152 ) as he is currently up there and reporting back and providing great info.

Wish we had someone in the Kimberley doing the same.

Cheers,
John

Hi John,

I'm not sure if this is ethical or not, my apologies to Don but he posted this on another public forum and I thought it may be helpful here,

He was talking about access to the Kimberley.

Regards from Col.

Hope your trip comes off Roy but I was talking to a friend at Theda Station who was describing to me the terrible state of the roads, the significant washouts and he wondered if the roads would even be open this year at all. He had heard that they might even have to make completely new sections of the road. The whole area up there has had record breaking rains. No doubt your commercial company will be up with the latest news but I mention this in case others were thinking of trying to see Black Grasswrens this year. This website gives conditions on the Gibb River Road but there are no websites I know of that describe the roads into Mitchell Plateau http://standards.mainroads.wa.gov.au/NR/mrwa/internet/realtime/TRC/RegionalConditions.asp?1

Hi Don,

Thank you for the info.

I rang the Shire Of Wyndham and they confirmed that parts of the Kalumburu Road have been washed away.

They told me to ring back in 2-3 weeks, as they will have a better idea to when it might be open?

Thanks,
John

I'm leaving for the Kimberley in 2 weeks, take 2 to 3 to get there but are still not sure that I'll be able to get to the Mitchell Falls even then. Still I'll head there but if everythings still closed I'll suss out other areas.

Regards from Col.

Hi Allyson and Grant.
We are staying at Loyalty Beach atm for another 3 nights, mostly I thought the road to be in pretty good condition, a few small sections up to Bramwell Junction, and some water on the road, quite a large section just South of Hahn River Roadhouse. From the Turnoff to Captain Billy Landing to the Ferry are some sandy sections which are quite washed out, some of these will slow you down to walking pace to get through them, and some sections of mild corrugations between the washouts. Graders are on the road going at it so it can only improve from here. We will update the road conditions section when we get back from Thurs Island tomorrow. Cheers for now, Kanga.

G'day Grant. We will leave Loyalty in 2 days and were hoping to go via Dunbar to Karumba, we may have to go a different way as the road we want is still closed :-( Wind got up a bit today, we went to TI for the day today, good day out, we got slapped about a little bit coming back in the Ferry though. Shame about your Mack and Lure being eaten, we are going to try for a Barra tomorrow. Still really quiet at Loyalty maybe 7-8 lots of campers. Cheers, Kanga.
