sms messages on inmarsat phone

I wondered about the experiences of others- has anyone successfully sent messages to optus, telstra, vodaphone or others on their satphone when travelling outside the city? How about emails?

Thanks snoopyone. It appears that inmarsat has agreements with telstra, optus, vodafone- but when I spoke to one of the representatives she gave the impression that one shouldn't rely on it . I'm still wavering about the best satphone to get before I lodge my subsidy form. Have you been satisfied with your iridium? I like the prepay option with credit that lasts for 2 years with Inmarsat as I can't see myself using it too much. But it could be useful to coordinate meeting people sometimes as we're usually out of mobile range when travelling. When you mention they couldn't contact you from Testra, I wonder if they put in the correct international code and prefix before messaging you as all calls or messages to and from your phone are obviously international.

With a Telstra sim and calling to and from Aussie numbers you dont need to have international numbers.

To ring me you just dialled my mobile number and if the sim was in the satfone it rang.

I tried SMS by sending to a friend on Optus and one on Vodafail.

They got mine but I never got theirs.

I actively discouraged people ringing me on it because of the cost and only had it on when I may have needed it for an emergency.

You misread my reply as I said THEY COULDNT TEXT ME ON MY TELSTRA IRIDIUM phone but I could text them on the other providers

Hi Snoopyone - Just purchased a Satellite Phone, I also have a Telstra NextG mobile.
Am I understanding you correctly – You take the Sim out of your Telstra Phone and operate it in the Satellite Phone?

If it is on the Iridium network What make and model is it

If it is on a Plan and internationally roamed yes Prepaid doesnt work

Do a search on "Satellite phones or satfones "

Has been discussed about every second week for yonks

bow and nan, what do you mean that you can send emails to and from Telstra? Could you put an email address in the address/ phone number bar? If you send an email it goes to any computer doesn't it?

Emails are no problems
Also people can send you emails from their computers for free
The phone also has the ability to send your GPS coordinates to email or SMS

Hang in there, word on the ground is that InmarSat may get local numbers soon
so no more 0011 61 etc.

dru,
quite true, local numbers may soon be available on these phones. That applies if one has a non-prepaid plan. But Outgoing calls will continue to be a similar price to what they currently are I believe.- around $1.10.

Incoming calls may not necessarily drop in price either, remains to be seen.

Do you mean you sent emails from your inmarsat phone? If so, did you have to connect it to your laptop/ pc to do so? Any idea what sending an email cost you?

Brett

I just send an SMS to an email address
Same cost as an SMS
The people can reply via email and it comes to the phone as an SMS
Their reply is free at the moment and yours cost an SMS

InmarSat are soon to allow data on IsatPhones (if not already)
a fairly low speed but may be good for longer emails
just hook the USB cable to your laptop

Bow and Nan, $69.85 US for 100 mins is good value shopping. Have you got a URL link, company name or phone # you could send me for that deal?

thanks, the guy at oneplanet was really helpful, informative, and offers the price you mentioned. He also said if credit is about to run out, I can message his mobile phone and he'll call back to the satphone , get credit card details, and recharge the phone. Now that's a service that's hard to beat!! Excellent link.
