I wondered if any one has experience of travelling along a track from Balgo to Kiwirrkurra and how you found the conditions. I think it skirts the western edge of Lake Mackay before heading towards Stansmore Range and up to Balgo.

Hi Tony.

There's an entry on it at http://www.4x4earth.com.au/tracks.html?site=346_Lake-Mackay-Track-

You will probably need to register on the site to see it.

I'll post you an MM.

Cheers.

Good run but stay well away if it is wet as lots of low lying spots, very interesting drive and very "scratchy", lots of pinstriping. Allow plenty of time as slow going too.

As Peter said a good track, probably hasn't had the chance yet to deteriorate. I've only done the southern half of it past the lake.

If you want a decent excursion off the track Carnegie's Wilson Cliffs is worth a visit. This video shows my visit, the first part shows some of the track you refer to.

Great run but as Pete said, it's a bugger when it's wet. Blog entries with video snippets etc here from our ill fated 2009 expedition;

Striking north to Lake McKay

Lake McKay and dunes to Dwarf Well

North of Bilbarrd outstation

A snakes hiss and on to Balgo

Cheers Mick

Ha Ha ha. No it only seems to happen here and there. How's things Dave. You'd have pushed a truck down that way wouldn't you? I know RR pushed the original track through and took out all the sandhills between Balgo and Jaga Jaga. Good drive but a testament to Government waste.

Cheers Mick

Hi Tony

this track was an easy run last year especially as heavy machinery was brought in from Kirrwikurra to the north of the lake for mining exploration. Some rain had filled the larger claypans further north but detours were available. We had to stay at Balgo for 3 nights as the Tanami was closed.

Thanks Alan, Peter, Mick and Andy for your helpful information. I was told of this track a few days ago and thought it might be worth seeing this country during our travels in August.

Cheers
