On my trip to
Cape York, I met up with a fellow traveller who was on a trip around Australia. He was travelling with a Winnebago that he had left in
Cairns and did the trip to the Cape in a Suzuki 4x4. One of the
places he told me to lookup on my way back was "Charles Mine" at
Coen. I missed it but wondered if anyone had any info on the place. Thanks in advance.

sign.

Ahh yes, Charlie's
Mine, not to be missed!!
Turn off at the same track into the rubbish dump just South of
Coen.
In fact, I think Charlie got most of his building materials from the dump!
Although there obviously were not any teeth to be had at the dump. lol
At one stage it was a working
mine of sorts but now is a museum (of sorts!) and a
campground.
Here are some pictures:

Charlie is Maltese which explains the Maltese Crosses on his "stained glass" windows.
You can look around his house for a gold coin donation, and
camp for a donation - say $5 a head. Hot water, clean amenities, all built by Charlie from found materials. Many interesting sculptures and gadgets around. He'll start his stamper for you and is good for a yarn. One of the Cape's characters.
On a Cape trip until I discovered Charlie's
Mine I used to push on to Archer River, late afternoon arrival and always crowded.
Coen is just right.
Look for the "4 U 2 C" signs.

Yes, I forgot the signs.
There are a whole series of cryptic signs.
I'd
camp there again.

Love Charlie's
Mine
Signs everywhere like
4 U 2 C,
I don't think he can spell too
well, and when we visited last year had just been banned from the pub in
Coen for life.
He later told us a life ban is about 3 months.
It is a great place to stay - from
Cairns you turn off just before you get to
Coen, and it is up past the tip a bit and turn in.
Great ammenities when you consider the place and he is always up for a chat.
