Hi All

After my usual phone calls to Patsy at Etadunna and Juanita at Transport SA today, this is the latest details for up on the Birdsville Track and the Cooper Creek Ferry.

The ferry crew arrived on site late yesterday and today are installing the 2 outboard motors and the covers. Patsy said the "Road Closed" is now in place just after the station and the ferry should carry its first vehicle this afternoon, with fine weather up on the track.

So who will be the first lucky EO Member to have the first ride.....half your luck

Cheers to All

Gday Stephen,
I'll be there next week - doubt I'll be the first EO up there.

They extended the ferry by 2 metres to 9.8m.....pity they didn't extend it another 600mm.

My Landcruiser and TVan comes in at 10.4 metres, so a simple combination like that still won't fit on the ferry. So we're heading up just for a look.

Thanks for the updates!

Cheers

We'll be in Birdsville in about a week, and tempted to do the same (go and have a look), but doubt 'The Landy + Tvan' combo would meet the requirements for a crossing...

Hi Phil

Half your luck and the weather up there at the moment is still perfect. The earliest that Fiona and I can get there is early August, so by them I think many members would have used the ferry.

Do not despair with the TVan. head out past the road closed sign and head for the Brennan Memorial. From there we head around a kilometre to the east and there were many great places to camp.

Have a great time and get lots of photos for the forum or a Blog.

Cheers

Hi The Landy

Head down for sure and you will have a ball. For starters you will be on the best side to camp near the ferry site amongst the trees. Set up camp and then take the Landy for a free ride on the ferry, as these events on the Cooper are rare.

Have a great time. In answer to the other question, 5 - 6 hours would be a good run through. Last year we stayed up there with EO members, and Ian and Ruth drove over 22 hours just to see the ferry, so seeing that you are that close, go for sure.

Have a great time.

Gday Stephen,
Thanks for the heads up on places to camp. Not often we have a waterfront option on the Birdsville Track!

Graham,
Your TVan must have the short drawbar.Mine came with the 400mm longer drawbar (a bit of a pain for us) and the 79series is already a long vehicle. If Eyre Creek was passable, we'd be up there is a flash too.

Hi Mick

Safe travelling for you also. Like above, the best camping is on the northern side, where you can set up camp and watch the ferry.

I just checked the length of mine and I scrape in by 100mm's. Woohoo. Just hope the other two travellers make the length OK. One is a 80series with a Tvan with long draw bar and the other is a Padge and trailer.Might need a stretchy tape measure LOL.

Des,
You'll need that stretchy tape measure!
I sized up my daughter's 80series and my long drawbar TVan yesterday. At 10.1 metres, it will be about 300mm over. You have the option of removing the floor from the back of the Tvan and saving 250mm so might scrape it in. Trailer has to be hitched. But to remove the rear Tvan floor, I think you'd have to cut the wiring.
TVan might be OK behind the Paj - do a bit of trailer swapping.
cheers

Gday Mick,
We'll miss you by a week unfortunately :-(( I'm guessing you've had some quality time over the border in WA!
We'll be at Cooper Ck this time next week - around 30th June, so will send a message back to EO land to let everyone know what it's like in paradise :-) Taking the kayaks for a bit of a paddle - should be fun. Then up the Oodnadatta track.

Cheers

Well, I guess that answers the question I had last week about if we should go up the Birdsville or Oodnadatta ... won't be able to take the van on the ferry, so Oodnadatta it is.

Hi Livin On The Road

This is one opportunity that I would not personally miss. It is only a 2 hour drive from Marree, so why you are so close, you may never get another chance to see the ferry running. Like I replied to Phil, there were large vans parked and camped at the actual Brennan site last year, with unreal water views.

It is you call, but seeing you are almost passing, at least have a look.

Cheers

Took my van up to the ferry last year - camped just upstream of the ferry and also over on the BV track proper by the water. Frosty mornings, mild days, lots of birds of many types. Turned out a good gravel road cruise - we camped one night at Lake Harry - need to take some firewood but - quite scarce.

Stephen, how wonderful. Hard to believe that it is a year since we hd such fun camped at the Ferry!
Ian coming back from Birdsville this weekend for two weeks (get some more gear) - project very slow (far too much red tape)
0 degrees here and frost up to the bird bath at the side of the shed (only 8 degrees inside at the table as I write this) sun is shining on the top of the nearby mountain and looks clear and beautiful.
Off to work - love your reports - I have little time to be part of this at the moment.
Love to Fiona as well

Hi Ruth

Yes this would have been the quickest 12 months that is for sure, now it is starting all over again. We have also had many good frosts as well, we a number of mornings of minus 3, and then you hear them complain on the radio how cold it is in Adelaide being plus 4 degrees....

As for being cold inside, our only form of heating is the wood fire and it runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and we have a constant 20 degrees inside and is always very comfortable.

We will head back to the same place to camp for a few days in early August, so if you and Ian would like to catch up again, I can give to firm dates.

I have this picture of a very nice lady from last year, I think she must have been waiting for someone to join their camp, any ideas of who it may have been.....

All the very best and regards to Ian and the boys.....sorry and the cat as well.

Best Regards

Stephen and Fiona

Hi all,

just to confirm Stephen L's info the following was posted on DTEI's Intranet site today:

"Cooper Creek ferry back in service
Thursday, 23 June 2011 - Transport Services Division

Queensland’s floodwaters are about to hit the state’s outback and Birdsville Track, allowing the Cooper Creek ferry to be relaunched for the second consecutive year.

The department has extended the ferry hull approximately two metres, making it 9.8 metres long, to provide additional room for both the local community and visitors to the region.

The iconic ferry will be relaunched once floodwaters from Queensland close the Birdsville Track.

Modifications to the ferry will ensure the local community retains access to the Birdsville Track once floodwaters force the closure of the causeway across the Cooper Creek.

The ferry service will operate during daylight hours only, seven days per week, granted the weather is favourable. The ferry is powered by two 15hp outboard motors fitted on either side of the vessel and guided by cables between the banks. It can carry up to 10 tonnes with a maximum length of 9.8 metres for vehicle or vehicle/trailer combinations.

Conventional caravans are prohibited, however some high clearance off road vans may be permitted.

Operational restrictions will be in place with signage erected at both Marree and Birdsville to advise potential travellers of the arrangements once the ferry is reinstated.

During normal conditions, the Birdsville Track carries approximately 40 vehicles a day. The department continues to work with the Bureau of Meteorology to monitor hydrological patterns in the far north.

Information is available online at www.sa.gov.au/ferryservices and also on the Outback Road Conditions website at www.dtei.sa.gov.au."

I trust those heading up there have a great time - pity work's got the better of me for the moment.

Thanks a heap for your regular updates in this area, Stephen. Your blood's worth bottling.

Charlie

Hi Charlie

Thanks for that and as you may be aware, it has been my pet project for a very long time. As you will also be aware, the reason why I post theses reports is to give reliable, accurate information that can sometime be hard to obtain.

I am now about to put something very special about the ferry, so keep an eye out for my next post tonight.

Cheers

A question for all you good folks. Do any of the creeks on the Birdsville Track require a snorkel to be fitted? On my fourby, of course.

Hi Kevin

Yes there are many small creek crossing along the Birdsville Track. With conditions the way they are along the Track at the moment, the only water that you should see will be at the Cooper Creek.

Apart from protection your engine for water crossing, the biggest benefits that I get out of my snorkel is supplying clean air while on dirt roads. My snorkel was the very first after market item that I put on my Prado.

That's the answer that I had hoped for Stephen. THanks. While I love my Jackaroo dearly (my wife sometimes thinks more than her) I am concerned at the lack of understanding among the mechanical community about the Jack's motor and I suspect that knowledge reduces with distance from the city. So I am keeping my options open at the moment by not over capitalising. But I do understand the benefits of a snorkel.
