Any injector specialists out there.
Last year my son brought a second hand 2009 model Hilux.
It had 30K on the clock and he has done another 40k.
Of late the engine warning light stays on whilst it is running.
Took it to the Toyota Dealer and was quoted $5000 for repair.
He said that the engine had unleaded petrol put through the injectors sometime in the past.
This would have to been over 40k ago, does this sound feasible?
Is this price about right?
Thanks for any informed advice - Dennis

not to me no.
Im assuming its a diesel your talking about though?
Id struggle to believe that any damage done 40K ago could surface now, or how he could tell this was the case unless its noted in the Toyotas service history.
And if its noted in the Toyotas service history then it was repaired by Toyota and covered by their 100K 3 year repair warranty.
But how about some more info-what is the fault code?
Get a second opinion from a reputable diesel mob.

The
check engine light on my landrover came on and the diagnostic said there was a fault when engine shut down. All the so called experts (3 dealers and independents) said it needed new injectors and injection pump costing between $2500 and $3500 to repair.
Not convinced I checked the engine shutdown solenoid which had a little crud where it seats - allowing a little fuel to dribble into the engine when shut down causing the fault - took 15mins to fix.
Now your problem will be different but the moral is get plenty of opinions as repairers just want to replace things at your expense rather than just diagnosing the problem. Take everything they say with a grain of salt.
As to your costs - I would not have thought that 4 injectors installed would be anything like $5000. Also - don't go to dealers - they often do not know their cars and their labour rates are over the top - not called stealers for nothing.
Go to a independent toyota specialist or even a diesel injection
shop.

Unfortunalty common rail injectors for toyotas are $900 ea, , We had a hiace that had bad fuel put through it and it cost $9000 to fix, with new injectors and pump.
Good luck Pete

I am not sure about all insurers, but last time a similar issue came up on this
forum I checked with my insurer GIO. They said that all repair costs would be covered in the event it was bad fuel or even if there was a failure as a result of me putting in the wrong fuel!! If it was my fault, then I had to pay the excess, but if it was bad fuel no excess. It pays to
check with your insurer.
The catch for the OP might be that he probably wouldn't be covered if it happened before he bought it or if it was a while ago.

Wow - $900 and people say Landrover parts are expensive - a Range Rover Sport TDV6 injector is just over $700.

They did have some injector issues ,
mine is a 07 model and they replaced my injectors under warranty when it was nearly 3 years old due to it being noisy when cold.
I have heard of a number of injector replacements under warranty in the earlier ( 05 to 07 models) but not for a newer one like yours.
As others have stated, unless it is a warranty freeby I would go to a private diesel specialist for a diagnois / repair.
I don't buy the unleaded fuel 40 k ago story though.
