I have a Landcruiser 100 series with LPG fitted. I do most mileage in the city and the Turbo diesel was not available when I bought it. This year I want to go to Tibooburra, Inaminicka and Birdsville. Next year I plan to go to Cape York, NT, Kimberleys and through Tanami desert. Is getting LPG an issue in these areas?

Drew, The simple answer is yes getting LPG in these areas is a problem. I was in the Connor country in 2000 and there is no LPG in that area. I was in the cape last year and there was definitely no LPG north of Cooktown and I am not sure if they had it in cooktown which would mean there wouldn't have been any reliable supply north of Cairns. IF you are looking at the Tanami you should be able to get LPG in ALice (I think) but from what I have read the next source might be Broome. LPG is not freely available outside of the coastly areas. As you now only have a 50L petrol tank you are really limited in your range.

Thanks Cashy, I actually now have 95 L petrol plus 100 L LPG. In relation to corner country this could be a problem but the extended trip I can carry an additional 60 to 120 L in Jerrys on my trailer if required. I was hoping to keep this to a minimum if possible but it does depend on LPG availability.

Drew,
You should have no problem getting LPG where there are bitumen roads (plenty here in Alice & along the Stuart Hwy). I've been told that gas tankers('cause they are aluminium tanks) are not allowed offroad due to the high risk of cracking the tanks, with the resultant dangers being obvious. Cheers and safe travel.

Drew, If you look at the "Fuel Prices" secition of this site you can get a fairly good idea of where LPG is sold around the country. The surprising thing for me is that it is (presently) about half the price per litre in the cities but gets close to petrol prices in more remote areas, so its not really worth it except in the city.

No LPG available in Birdsville - closest is Charleville, Mt Isa, Alice Springs.

Drew,
The last place you will get LPG on the way to Cape York is at Cooktown.
