Hi there

All systems are go for our trip to Arnhem Land in August / September. Permits, camp sites are secured ror both the Cobourg Peninsula and Nhulunbuy.

Given it this is my first trip into this part of Arnhem Land, I was wondering if anybody has any advice to prepare for our trip and maximise our experience.

Specifically, what are the must sees ? Apart from permits, is there anything else to be organised beforehand ?

We are well set up and will be with friends. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Michael A

Mate , have lived in Nhulunbuy for many years. Be very careful driving in from Katherine. The dirt road has claimed a few lives and many car accidents. The Goyder River is about 600mm deep and you will have no problems crossing. Carry 2 spares and sit on about 80klm. Especially if towing. Sorry but I just realised that you will be coming in from Oenpellie way. Mate ..dont. The road is totally ruined from the recent rains. I stayed at Raminginning last week for work and had a couple of radio lines people come into camp. They said that if it hadnt of been for a few local aboriginals they would have drowned their car in one of the several river crossings. As is was they had to winch out 4 bogged cars. These people are experienced in this neck of the woods and their advice is generally spot on. i was supposed to drive from Nhulunbuy to Darwin via the Rammo track but will be going via Bulman. Carry spare fuel from Katherine to Nhulunbuy.

Bigfish

Thanks for taking the time to give me the heads up. We will come into Nhulunbuy from Katherine and fortunately, not in a hurry so will take care.

Looking forward to having a good look around.

Carry spare fuel from Katherine to Nhulunbuy. Sometimes the fuel places are not open due to them being aboriginal communities. Prices are expensive for anything in town. A permit is required to purchase alcohol. Permits are reqd for any where you wish to visit. Many people are fed up with the bloody silly permit system. Its based on land ownership and race. Very windy up here at present due to south easterlies. Fishing can be difficult. Fuel..$2.00 unleaded..diesel..$1.88. It is a great part of the world but not without its problems. Enjoy the track in and drive carefully.
cheers

Hi Michael.

We were at Coburg four or five weeks ago. If you do not have a boat, contact Adventure North and arrange a trip to the Victoria settlement. Coastal drive is also good at low tide.

enjoy.

As already said dont forget the permit for buying grog.... Just ask in town and they will tell you where they are handing them out on the day...

Go to Dhimurra council and check out the campsiites they have on offer..
There are a heap of camping areas which you can put dibs on with some money and then that means no-one else is allowed to come and camp there while you are there,,, you can buy your very own camp spots,, and i mean a fair area...

For example,, wonga creek is the pick of the bunch...you can hire it for days at a time,,, another great camp spot is Goanna,, which requires no permit and it is another fantastic spot with a water hole...

Both of these places are pretty much free of water nasties...

Camp at the town creek and you will be smashed by sand flies,,, or anywhere near the ocean along there,,, mate and they are BAD...

If you trawl along the back of the granites you could / should catch some nice fish...

On the southern side of the goyder river there is a road off to the north which goes to rammo and before rammo on the eastern side of the road there is a place called "old arafura" or "murwangi" ,, well you can get a permit to go to murwangi station and there is a billabong there that is chockablock/full/teaming/abundance,,,,, of fish and they are not hard to catch...Huge buffalo and huge crocs,,,, look it up...

Don't you think that the question of permits is getting a bit out of hand? WE are supposed to be one people living in one land and yet certain races of people require permits. Captain Cook had a permit. It was called a musket.

The only people that give a crap about permits in arnhemland are the northern land council.....
Most of the traditional owners dislike the land council......
Any t/o can give you better permission than the land council.....
We steer clear of the land council....
