In good weather its a good road and you can sit on 100Kph in most places, just because it's dirt doesn't mean it's rough.

Even better when the grader has been through.

Just remember the Plenty hwy turns into the donahue hwy and i challenge anyone to sit on 100kmh there.....
So David,, the donahue is pretty much just two wheel tracks and is much slower going than the plenty..

David said the Plenty and thats what we commented on.

I can't see why you can't sit on 130Kph as that's the speed you can sit on on the Stuart Highway that the Plenty turns in to just like the Donahue dose.

The Stuart is pretty much a major road and is much faster going then the Plenty....

HHmmm... Yeah ok...

Well the 130 limit is only for the Stuart Hwy...

A far as commenting on the Plenty because thats all he asked for,,,, well thats ok,, i guess a little extra in the answers doesnt hurt just in case they were deciding to go to Boulia and didnt misjudge the time a travel.....

And 130 on a dirt road,, seriously??....

I must be chicken,, i am always assuming a dip or someone doing a u-turn or even a blowout is just around the corner.....

Chow chow...........

Hi to you all,
The Plenty Highway is a highway ,but dirt & mostly well graded. There is some bitumen on the way to Gem Tree. As for traveling that fast on unsealed roads , it isn't wise even if it has just been graded ,especially if towing.
I haven't been there for a long time but I'll never forget the Donahue.!!!!
This is no highway!!!, the bull dust in some sections especially after trucking
at mustering time is very bad & very deep.
Bull dust gets into every thing! & is easy to get bogged in. Always check with fellow travelers who've just come through from there. Wherever you're going.
Have a safe trip. Drive according to conditions. Some of the station owners do that speed & more, but may the devil help the Tourist who hits & kills their cattle, if the Tourist doesn't kill themselves as well. in the accident.
Take care, keep safe.
With best wishes. Ma.

Well you said you can't sit on 100kph on the Donahue which joins the Plenty and I'm saying you can sit on 130kph on the Stuart that joins the Plenty.... didn't say anything about doiing 130kph on the Plenty.

My comments about the speed on the Stuart is as informative as your comments about the Donahue.

David said nothing about the direction he is traveling in.

Fair enough.
I agree with Been- Everywhereman.
There are several turn-off's from the plenty it was you who fist mentioned the Donahue.
I'm not going to interested in an argument. This Forum is viewed by many people. I haven't written a lengthy reply, my comments about the Donahue may help others as well. No Drama. I just thought I was helping!
By the way David, are you planning a trip via the Donahue? It could of changed now, maybe I should've left it out.. You can flip & roll in bull dust, too so ,was just
mentioning it.
Pa says,
Traveling at 130 kph isn't wise in our books either, on any of these roads
there are cattle on the roads and other hazards, including the Stuart highway too.
Goodbye,Ma & Pa.

Pa & Ma I wasn't having a go at you, my tongue in cheek comments were directed at Been-Everywhereman.

Please don't take it the wrong way and your comments were correct and where I mentioned 130Kph.... it was said as a joke. LOL

We did Boulia to Jervois week before last. Lots of roadwork going on. Some (small) sections we were doing 30-40kph but lots of it were 80-90kph easily. We covered our trip in one day quite easily with a lunch break near Tobermorey stn.
cheers

On our recent trip to the Gulf Country we visited many pubs (funny that!) and frequently they had photos of vehicles dating back to 1930’s and onwards, fascinating stuff. When you take into account the tracks and road conditions back then you get an appreciation for what can be done with a vehicle on any road or track, providing you drive to the conditions. And that isn’t to say they didn’t have their problems either...

One photo showed a Singer ute loaded with a wool bale, about to set off. And I’m not suggesting anyone should rush out and drive the family Commodore across the Plenty Highway, but no reason it couldn’t be done either...

Thanks to one and all for your replies. Unfortunately, looks like our trip has to be postponed till next winter.
plan is to go from Boulia to Alice, down to Oodnadatta and back around to Innamincka, then back home to Brisbane.
hope next winter is drier than last winter (2010) we were out on Diamantina NP, followed by Welford NP on way home. got rain, and a bit more rain, so thought it prudent to head back to the blacktop. it poured all the way home to bris. not to worry though, still enjoy being out & about, whatever the weather, (providing we dont get stuck somewhere of course)!!!

Rained in Welford again this year...just back!

Hi David,
We wound up on plan C for the same reasons but we were trying to do the Sandy blight Junction Track for the second yr. No go Kintore had 4" & then it never stopped raining.
So up to Policemans waterhole in the Davenport Ranges near Tennant Creek. Beautiful place. We had 3 nights there in lovely sunshine.
We could see the weather coming so had to head back down. We got to Tennant Creek & down it came , so then came plan C. & it was great.
Sorry about you having to postpone your trip.
Take care, safe travels.
Bye Ma.
