Hi all
We are travelling to
Karumba in late September and generally we don't pre book into caravan parks, but choose one to stay at when we arrive at our destination. However, after reading a few of the old threads on the
forum it sounds like we should definitely book into a caravan park up there before we go as it can get quite crowded. Is this the case in late Sep - early oct? If so, do any members have a suggestion on which is a good van park to stay at and how far in advance do we need to book? It will be my husband and myself and 2 kids (12 & 14), and we are towing an old millard van with a nissan patrol.
We would also like to hire a (small) boat to do a bit of fishing and are wondering if we should also book this before we leave.
We are looking at going over to
Lawn Hill NP/Adels Grove while we are up there. Would it be recommended to pre book into the Adels Grove van park also? Or are there any other
places to set up the van around there?
Any information is much appreciated.
Thanks

Joshane,
The CP on the point is the better park to stay at.
Book everything as it is very crowded at that time of year.
You should
check with the locals as towing an old millard van you may have to go the long way to
Lawn Hill. The track from
Doomadgee to
Lawn Hill is easy enough though tight in spots for a van.
Cheers

we took an on road van into Adels Grove withot any probs at all. There was one dip/washout after the mining turnoff but it wasn't bad. Just take it easy and you should be fine. hem at Adels just to confirm the road is ok - they are pretty helpful people there and will also tell tou if you need to book. I don't think you will need to but a phone call will clear it all up.

Would that be via 4 Ways and
Gregory not the
Doomadgee track?

Expect that Adels Grove could be pretty warm by then and most will have moved South to avoid the heat. It was 38 degrees when we were around in September and 39 when we went into
Normanton on the way to Karaumba.
The
Karumba caravan parks were about half full late in the month

We had no trouble getting in at Adel's Grove in late August; not many there at all. No powered sites but they have a generator area. If you do phone a day or two ahead to be sure of a place, ask about road conditions and which way they recommend.

that was via
Gregory mate - which is a nice little stopover itself or at least a break even though you're nearly there. Last time we went it was getting late so we just stopped overnight at
Gregory and had a nice easy cruise into Adels next morning after a refreshing dip.

I have no suggestions but may run into you as we are going up to
Karumba with the
Lightning Ridge Police Bush Bash at that time . Could be over 50 vehicles in the Convoy . We are in a silver 90 series Prado with Exploroz sticker

The Mexicans all start heading
home in the last couple of weeks of September. They have to go back for grandchildren sitting in the school holidays, the bowls pennants commence on the October long weekend and they all wan to be
home for the grand finals. I would not bother booking.
Stay at Sunset Caravan Park

I suggest you
sign up to Garry's site for more useful info on parks. His is the most comprehensive list of parks I can find. Where there is a Badgers report on a park you are interested in there will be a link straight to that report.

Hi Joshane,
My husband and I and two other couples were in
Karumba in late September last year and the place was just about deserted. We did book but most definitely would not have had any trouble at all getting a site. The only mistake we made was that we weren't in
the beach front park - not that there was any problems with the one that we were in. We had the place pretty much to ourselves.
We were at the
Karumba Point Tourist Park but I think the one we should have been at is called
Karumba Point Sunset Caravan Park - pretty much on the beachfront.
We were also at Adele's Gove just before we got to
Karumba. We did book here too and I think it would pay to although there seemed to be plenty of room when we were there. I think we only rang and booked when we came through
Cloncurry. We were in the actual
camp ground so that we could use our generators as there is not powered sites there. Adele's Grove is definitely the better place to
camp and if you don't need power down in
the Grove itself looked like a fantastic place to
camp.
Lawn Hill looked very uninspiring as a
camp ground. It was extremely hot when we were there. Around 40 - 42 degrees. Made for a very uncomfortable nights sleep. One couple (not with us) went down for a swim around 10 o'clock one night. We all wished we'd done the same. We did do plenty of swimming during the day that's for sure.
Anyway, hope that info's of some help.
Cheers!

Thanks for the info! At least we know now to give the van park a call before we get there. We weren't sure if you had to book weeks or days in advance, so you have cleared that up for us. Sunset caravan park does seem to be the favoured spot, so we will definitely look into staying at that one.
Thanks again
Jodi
