Has anyone got the new Spot Connect, Not sure if it's available In Australia yet
I want to use it with my iphone4
I'm in USA now and have a chance in buying it for $139
Someone in one of the forums said they were using it here but can't find the thread now
This was meant to be released in Australia last March but not sure what the delay is
Cheers in advance

Hi Nick , are you sure they are using Spot-Connect?

Spot Connect has the feature where you can blue tooth any message you want once your out in the field from your smart phone.

Cheers

Been toying with the idea for a long time to get a Spot but the fact that you can't get a reply to a SMS is putting me off a bit and I might as well just get a basic small EPIRB. A example would be you activate your help and you don't know if your contacts got your msg and what they are planning to do about a recovoery since it's a one way comms.

With the cost of a Inmarsat Phone more apealing to me I am starting to lean more towards the Sat phone

On my recent trip I had SMS to my own phone as well as a friend, and dropped them a 'we have arrived message' each day. When I checked I had received an SMS to my phone within about a minute of sending it, without exception.

Undertand your point, but it seems to work quite well.

Troll,

I'd hang off on the Inmarsat for a little while. I think there are a few issues with this phone/satellite system that are starting to mature now that a few people have them and are trying to use them.

Member Jaydub has mentioned to me in recent weeks that his phone was near useless on their recent GSD trip having just bought it in June. I know I was certainly trying to contact him and utilised their "free" SMS system to provide assistance in their travels but very few were received and no phone calls got through. We ended up going back to his iridium unit.

I may be wrong but as it’s a fairly new product and service, I’d be letting it rest until there are a few users about to provide feedback. I wish someone had advised me accordingly on the Globalstar phone I bought a few years back lol.

Cheers Mick

Thanks Mick,

Intersting comments, I have read really good reviews on them and actually spoke to their sales people at the camping show the other day and he told me that the 000 calling will be fixed very soon as well.

Will monitor closely

I ended up ordering a Spot 2 from the US I figured with the iPhone there are just 2 many things that can go wrong and if I run out of battery on the phone I can't send text, you can still send a emergency help should you run out of juice from the device, getting no reply back was the decider for me.

I will get a sat phone next to complete my emergency needs.

Perhaps we should wait until Delorme's new product hits the Oz market.

I see that it is also using Iridium. I assume the SPOT/Delorme romance has borken down.

You can read about Delorne's new product (to be launched soon in the USA) here
