Her indoors has given the go ahead to by a GPS, but there is a problem!!
No suprise it's money. I would like an in dash unit for the 4x4 but we also have a car so the boss tells me it has to be dash mounted, I also do a lot of hunting and use a very old handheld GPS that has no maps but does get me back to the 4x4 (when I can get enough satellites ). I have done some of the Binn's Track, been up to the Gulf etc & will be doing a lot more.
So the question is would something like a Garmin Montana 650T cover my needs?

Hi
Montana should be OK - its essentially a large screen Oregon with added ability to issue voice directions (Oregons just beeps) via attached speaker or earphones (subject to a suitbale mapset being installed) - so this feature puts it ahead of a lot of other "handhelds".
Size may be seen by some as a bit cumbersome for carrying around the bush but havent spotted one yet so that remains to be seen. I dont think they have been officially released in Australia yet though assume they are not far away as some retailers have them advertised. Some user reviews on US websites complain about the software/firmware being buggy but assume Garmin are onto this wih new updates?
Some US sourced units available on Ebay but Australian price looks reasonable (relativley speaking - they are one of the more expensive handhelds) given you also get Garmin topo maps included. I have ordered a Montana 600 to see what they are like.
Cheers

Thanks for that Greg.
I might wait for a few AUS reviews on the Montana & research other brands as I'm still not convinced on the right way to go.

No worries
There are not many units that do full street nav with voice directions and also can be used in the bush. I currently use a
TwoNav Aventura which I personally like but it may not be everyones "cup of tea" (for starters thay are a tad expensive).
A range of good GPS units a pretty cheap these days - maybe getting a dedicated in car unit and a separate handheld would be cheaper/same and more effective than just getting one unit that does both.
Cheers

I have a Two Nav 7' and am still coming to grips with it. Has so many functions and not being a tech head I find it a little complicated. All I really need is the GPS. Cost $600.00

I would never buy a stand alone GPS ever again, Iphone thanks, you then have a choice of GPS Apps, On Road, Off Road, and a host of apps that compliment a travelling. Off course thats me.

Why not look on the internet? I just bought a 5inch for $100. All street mapsand it talks to you etc. For off road you may have to load Ausie CE and the 250 tho nat maps or, something similar.
Mine came from "ozchoice" in Victoria. Very good to deal with. Very prompt in replying to questions and posting.[ no association ]

It's only money, just go to the hole in the wall and get some more - like I do and you can get the best one every time you want it, - just like me:-) but if there's none there (in the hole in the wall) send her indoors out to get a job so you can get the one you want, it's just a case of economics not relationships!
Take this comment with a pinch of salt its not serious.
