camping with fires permitted in longreach/rolleston kind of area

Hi all,

We have bought a CT and have been to a few places nearby but we are still looking and keen to go each weekend.

We have been to
Teresa Creek - very pretty, but basically a big van park.
Blackdown Tablelands - great place, will definately go back.
Cape Hillsborough - also great and will definitely go back.
Fraser Island - excellent and we go up to the cape each year.

There are a few National parks around, but they dont permit camp fires and this is one of our favourite past times, cooking and chatting around the campfire.

Does anyone know of any nearby place to Longreach/Emerald/charters towers areas?

thanks

Hi gypsy99, Their is a nice spot 36 kls nth of Charters Towers on the Gregory Dev Rd called Flecther Creek, It is free camping with showers and toilets. Not much fire wood near the site but drive along the road and their is plenty. You can stay for as long as you like. Will try to put a photo up for you. Cheers Andy.

Hey Andy,
Thanks for that one. It looks nice and peaceful. I will look it up.

I also found this one outside of Winton I think. Bough Shed Hole Campground?
According to Exploroz it says camp fires permitted but DERM says no fires. Dont suppose you have ever heard of it or been there?

thanks again

I looked it up in "camps 6" and it shows on fires or fire place, the photo in the book looks like a gas only camp. You will need camping permit to stay their. Hope this helps . Andy

Fletcher Creek is a nice spot but can get awfully crowded at times and the mining roadtrains can sometimes be a bit annoying when they use their air horns in the wee hours of the morning. There is a track on the northside of the bridge that goes down onto the Burdekin River......no facilities in here but some quite nice camping spots though.

Thanks for that one Andy. It goes to show you cant take what is on the DERM website as correct! This one says no fires and clearly there is a fire pit!

thanks

Hi gypsy99,

Its not too close to the area you have mentioned but....

We stayed at Bough Shed Hole near Winton a few years ago, in Bladensburg National Park, and had a campfire on the banks of the creek each evening. Not sure whether the rules have changed since.

From memory, it had a pit loo and a couple of fireplaces.

Regards,

Heather
