Hello out there...
Great winter so far up here in the Pilbara, quick question...
I've had enough of the NSW registration costs, greenslips, insurance, etc etc and am looking to transfer to another state for storing my camper and truck for the off season of 9 months and I was hoping someone might be able to suggest the best (cheap and easy) state to register and store the Rig?
Any help would be much appreciated.

Dr Rus

Be careful because i believe that you have to have residential status in the State of registration.
Misreprentation of this requirement, could adversely affect your insurance.

Thanks for the heads up, I am currently residing in WA but vehicle is rego'd in NSW.
Think I'll probably go with WA now.

Hi Dr Rus,

The first hurdle to overcome will be where your Drivers Licence was issued.

Our daughter had her drivers licence changed from SA to Qld with the result that no vehicle registration renewal arrived from the SA authorities. When we questioned them, they advised that she could only register her car in the state that licensed her to drive.

Regards,

Charlie

Dr Rus,

I think you need to ask relevant registration authorities as the rules to change from state to state - eg in some states the registration address is where the vehicle is normally garages not the owners residential address.

Lots of good ideas made here but can you rely on the information.

If you can get a Victorian address then that is the Cheapest State.
I used to have a handle on life, but it broke.

I know some people who live in Qld and changed their van rego to Vic because it is cheaper. Vic was only too happy to do it even though the vans home is Qld.

Has been a bone of contention before and this is the QLD reg

This was the answer in regard to a guy who was driving a car registered in his fathers name in NSW but was living in QLD and using the vehicle permanently

Queensland, the registered operator of a vehicle does not indicate that this is the legal owner of the vehicle.

The Transport Operations (Road Use Management - Vehicle Registration) Regulation 1999, recognises visiting interstate registered vehicles. Temporary visitors from interstate who do not have a permanent address in Queensland are not required to register their vehicles in Queensland. However, once a vehicle is garaged permanently in Queensland, it must be registered within 14 days. Accordingly, if the vehicle you have mentioned is permanently garaged in Queensland, not New South Wales, the registered operator is committing an offence if he/she does not register the vehicle in Queensland.

Department of Transport and Main Roads has a policy in place which enables a person to report vehicles that are detected of being permanently garaged in Queensland with interstate number plates attached. Reports will be accepted, provided people offer their name, address and telephone contact and supply specific details of the vehicle being reported. The information required includes registration number, make, model and colour of the vehicle, location date and time of sighting. All complaints should be in writing to the Senior Transport Inspector, of the department's regional office where the vehicle was sighted. Any case of interstate vehicles operating in Queensland for prolonged periods will be investigated and appropriate action taken.

In Queensland, Department of Transport and Main Roads act as a collection agent for the relevant CTP insurers. For further information on the CTP your questions should be directed to the Motor Accident Insurance Commission, GPO Box 1083, Brisbane Qld 4001, or by visiting their web site www.maic.qld.gov.au.

I trust this information will be of assistance.

Forgot to say that part of the reason was that the vehicle had been modified and wouldnt have passed inspection in QLD

Thats what I thought. I'll pass that on. I think their tow vehicle is registered in Qld. Does your post apply to towed vehicles too?

Presumably it applies to all registered vehicles as I would think it should.

It says its the garaged address of whatever so if your van lives in QLD its garaged there.

We recently had issue with the Qld rego mob.We are nsw residents and nsw drivers licensed but wanted to move a nsw rego rav4 to qld and swap the rego to that state which we where intending to garage at mother inlaw house so that when we fly into sunny coast[often monthly/fortnightly] we had a car to run around in.The qld rta would not let us do this as we did not have either a local license or reside at the address, so at this moment car in qld with nsw rego. We got stupid govts that are not commited to aged and disability so we have to do it from interstate and stupid govts that can't arrange some form of national licensing and rego systems,

It would be beneficial to all if we had a national registration system.
We are on an Island so why not have this with the vehicle showing the state on the plates and any money from that rego going to that state and having all state rego the same cost.
We the motorist are nothing but financial fodder for governments of all types.
