Hi Joe, Thats an easy trip. Take the Birdsville track to Marree then straight down through the Flinders Ranges (and explore for a few days) and to Port Augusta. Phil.

Joe,
Agree with Phil's suggestion on the Flinders Ranges which are only a slight detour off the Marree - Port Augusta Road. If you have extra time on your hands, you might think about taking the turn off from Leigh Creek and heading up to Arkaroola and the Gammon Ranges, then heading down the road from Balcanoona to Wirrealpa and into the Flinders Ranges.

Hi Joe

Yes the Birdsville Track is open and when we did a double trip up and down just last week, the track is in the best condition that we have seen it in for a number of years. Some tips for fuel if you are diesel.

When in Birdsville, get you fuel at the Mobil and you will save $0.04 per litre compared to Birdsville Auto. If you can skip the rest of the fuel stops down the track (Mungeranie and Marree) and make your next fuel stop at the Lyndhurst Hotel, the cheapest fuel anywhere in the area, including Birdsville-Birdsville Auto $1.74 per litre, Gaffneys Mobil in Birdsville $1.70 per litre, Hawker $1.68 per litre , Marree $1.95 per litre, Lyndhurst Hotel $1.63p per litre.

If you have time, make sure that you stay at the Cooper Creek ferry site crossing, as this is a chance of seeing the Cooper in this area full of water. To get a better view of the extent of the flooding, take the helicopter flight with Paul.

There are a number of ways of seeing the Flinders Ranges if you have the time, if not take the detour at Parachilna and go to Blinman, then down past Wilpena and on to Hawker.

Have a great time in a classic area of Outback Australia.

Cheers

Just two quick questions

New bullbar looks great

Hi Teza

Yes the BP on the Main Road is still operating, but the Lyndhurst Pub only sells diesel. When we were speaking to the owner, he was saying that he sells very large quantities of it because of the price. I can not confirm the price in Innamincka at the moment, but he was saying it was $2.10 per litre.

The bull bar is great and the very first thing that we noticed when in the Simpson is that the bar did not bottom out on some of the dunes like the standard bar that broke off.

Cheers

Sounds about right for Innamincka, lets charge way more than anyone else and then add 10c.

Mungeranie is a good place to stop for a beer, I prefer having a beer with Phil to sitting in the Birdsville pub.

Or better still pop into Mungerranie and have a beer and burger, support the people out there. At the end of the day you might spend a few extra dollars in fuel.

Hi MM

Mungeranie is a top spot for sure and there is a lot to see and do there and would never drive past without stopping.

My dig about the fuel prices is purely aimed at both William Creek and Marree who are cashing in on the very high numbers of tourist that are heading that way to see Lake Eyre.

One local here in Clare went up there last year for a plane ride and had a puncture at William Creek. Asking can it be repaired the answer was yes and paid the $50 to have it repaired up front. So what happened next the guy comes out with a tyre repair kit, does not even take the tyre off of the vehicle and inserts a string repair. Now if that is not being Ned Kelly, what is. The price of the string would have only been in the cents.

Even when we did our recent trip up the Birdsville Track we came across two vehicles about an hours drive south of Birdsville. They were in a real state, not having any puncture repair kit and having already punctured their only spare. So what did I do, told them not to worry, flicked my bonnet and using my under bonnet pump, pumped up his front flat tyre, found where the puncture was, got my tyre repair kit out of the car, fitted a string in the whole, checked for leaks and were on our way again in less that 10 minutes, What did I charge, nothing and this is what you do, help others out when they need it and not taking advantage of their situation.

Go out that way when things are normal and the price of fuel is never that dear.

Cheers

Lyndhurst Pub might have the cheapest fuel in the area but we got charged $1 for using EFTPOS. I wrote to the publican via email and gave him a serve and got his hackles up big time.....lol

You are a good lad helping those unfortunates, Stephen L

Hi SIF4X4

Either you were unlucky or we were lucky, but on our recent trip up and back on the Birdsville Track, we were not charged any fee for using EFTPOS at the Lyndhurst Pub.

I would hope that any decent person coming across anyone in this situation would do exactly what we did.

Cheers

Ray, is that the "Silverton" NSW, near Broken Hill ????
I did look at the "trips/gatherings" but it actually did not give away to much details as to locations, other than names, maybe something admin could look at it as it is written as if i would already know know locations...
Cheers

Hi Joe
Sorry it took so long to reply, but yes that is Silverton near Broken Hill, so not that far from where you'll be.
Maybe we will see you there? Enjoy your trip anyway
