Just got back from a week in NZ. I was amazed that everywhere I went, and every outlet regardless of brand name sold petrol at exactly the same price. It was 202.9 c/ltr. I am wondering how their systems works that the price is the same everywhere and yet within 1/2 hr of being home we saw 3 different prices. The worst I've ever seen was 10 c/ltr different, both caltex servos across the road from each other??? I know the kiwis got the rugby wrong the other night but at least they know what they are paying for petrol.

I think they pay the equivalent of our ctp insurance as a fuel levy. Therefore the more you drive, the more insurance you pay. I don't know if this has an effect on prices? Mike

I was told that in Auckland when I hired a car because I wanted to know if I was covered properly. Did I misunderstand them? Part of my question was why the fuel price was so high.

Hi
I have a V8 Diesel both in Australia and in New Zealand along with other vehicleshere, so I consider I have a good comparison between costs.
NZ prices first then Aus
Registration $552 $1022 includes $353 CPT
Insurance $800 - $800 approx both vehicles valued the same,
(includes 3rd Party NZ)
Diesel $1.54 - $2.20 down to $I.42.
( less 10% discount) (some discount if you buy groceries at right place)
We pay RUC ( Road User Charges) on Diesel Vehicles on mileage/Ks basis 5000Ks $230. Last lot I bought.
There is no STAMP DUTY on new vehicles.
ACC Levy is included in the registration cost
Something in the vicinity of 40% of fuel price goes into building and maintenance of the roading network, money mainly spent in Auckland and selected tourist routes. (perhaps Aus should do some of the same and start with the Warrego Highway)
Nice bridge in Brisbane but a one way trip cost me $4.50
Hire vehicle Insurance costs are excessive high in both country's main reason why I bought my own vehicle in Aus.
I hope you enjoyed your visit anyway.
Cheers

Hi again.
In NZ I can put registration on hold for from 3 month periods up to 12 months.
Does anyone know if I can do the same in Qld, currently I am paying a full year registration when the vehicle is only used for around 3 months.
The F250 registration is put on hold while I am in Aus.
Cheers

Because they don’t get the same level of retail discounting in New Zealand that Australia enjoys. The reason you saw prices variances when you got home is price completion at work. At least with the two Caltex servos with a 10 cent difference you had a choice due to discounting...

I’d be more worried if prices were the same...

Hi
Did you buy any bananas while you were here. $1.49 here cheaper than the $14.99 when I was over there 3 weeks ago.
The price of Border Protection I suppose.
Not to mention apples!!

Went there in march and enjoyed the bananas i think they came from some south American country. I also noticed how courtious the drivers are and they actually slow down to the posted 30 kmh for roadworks Brian

Most of our imported tropical fruit comes from the South Pacific sold mainly under the Dole brand.
We grow our own pip fruit, cheaper and tastes better too.
Believe or not Aus beef can be bought in the BIG SUPERMARKETS here, subsidized I suppose.
I must admit the beef and lamb I buy at a butcher in AUS is very good, no extra cost to get it cyrovaced, and friendly service.
Most of us live in the South Pacific it is a small world.
Cheers
