Hi all,
I don't normally do trips planned via point to point GPS navigation however did so last month.

I had my old HP Ipaq PDA from 2007 running Oziexplorer CE. This is not a bad unit though I wouldn't mind a bigger screen. Using the Oziexplorer Screen Designer Software, available from their site for free I reprogrammed the six main screens to display all the features I wanted, how I wanted.

Screen1: Full moving map with cursor at location
Screen2: 3/4 Moving Map with compass, distance to waypoint, heading, waypoint name and bearing
Screen 3: Compass, route name, heading Bearing, distance to waypoint, waypoint name
Screen 4: Nearest waypoint list, up and down arrows, goto function
Screen 5: Date, time, satellite graphs, sunset, sunrise, odo, altitude, gps on/off, create waypoint, and quit program
Screen 6: Route name, next waypoint, bearing, distance, previous waypoint, next waypoint, load route, forward nav, reverse nav and Stop Nav.

This is great software and makes the old GPS come alive again however is all academic as I forgot 1 important function.

The Cross Track Error (XTE) tells you how far you you are perpendicular from an imaginary line that goes from your previous waypoint and your destination waypoint. If you don't know what side of the line your are on or how far you are away from it then this information is important. My companions last trip were frequently called on the radio for an XTE update from me, who where all running full versions of Ozi and had the info at their fingertips. Perhaps I was over confident and didn't think I needed it:)

Something to think about if your planing a point to point trip, or something to remember to put in if you are playing with the new screen designer software.

Cheers
Alan

Hullo Alan
Thanks for this post - very interesting and thought provoking
Certainly XTE is very useful in navigating a boat, as it detects any movement to port or starboard of the imaginary direct line to the destination, be it due to cross tidal currents and/or leeway when sailing. This can be important if the intended course (and waypoints) has been selected to avoid obstacles such as reefs, sand banks, etc.
The other indicator is bearing to next waypoint, which I notice you have in Screen 2 (last item). This does not give the same level of assurance as XTE, however, when at sea.
But for cross country travel it could be useful, as rather than get too focussed (and anal) re XTE, it would perhaps allow one to be a bit more inventive in selecting the path of least resistance and, within reason, picking the "best" route remaining.
Cheers
Andrew

Hi Andrew,

I can very well understand the benefits for Nautical Navigation; I would hate to come upon an unexpected reef.

If I had the function enabled I could have been a bit more "adventurous" to a certain extent (or less anal lol) however without it I was more concerned with it as I could not immediately refer to it.

It would have been useful in situations similar to what is in this picture, where the track is not very apparent.

Cheers
Alan

Hi Andrew, Not sure if you remember me, I met you at Rutters Grave with the fathers and sons crew, I really like my Hema Navigator, with the topo mapping. We are doing the Kidson Track early in Oct, have you been along it, Cheers Peter.

I remember you Peter.
I envied you as you were heading for Woodhouse Lagoon...I was with my mum.
Hema Navigator should see you right. I haven't done the Kidson however have traveled the Telfer track to Kunawarritji. I still have your business card.

Regards
Alan
