Tregg Hitch

HI,

We are wondering if anyone knows if we can hook up a 4bar stabilizer system to a Tregg Hitch?

Is this the best hitch option to work in conjunction with a stabilizer system

I don't think a 4 bar weight distribution, or even a Reece hitch will be suitable for any 4 wheel driving situation. It will put way to much strain on the trailer A frame and bend something as soon as you go up a bump and down in to a ditch.

Yes you can. I occasionly use to bars on the van. However, only use them on the bitumen.

Hi Tony,
Do you have a photo of your setup? I believe that you have to make changes to the vehicle portion of the Tregg hitch to allow it to fit on the HR hitch.

Hi Tony,
Thanks for the photos.....that's how I pictured it would have to be changed.
Remove the 90 degree rods that stop the Tregg from spinning around.
I assume that you have welded it to the HR base?

Hi Gary,

You could try fitting the Tregg without any cutting. I had to cut the arms off and then grind a bit off the welded part of the rod to make it fit. A friend of ours attached his with out any cutting or grinding. All depends on the base casting. You will also notice a recess ground out of the base plate below the lower tongue. This is to allow the pin to drop down low enough so the D clip is easier to attach. I drilled the pin hole out as well and use an 8mm stainless rope snap lock. Safer than those stupid clips.
No, no welding. The threaded rod should be long enough to take a spring washer and nut. Just make sure the nut is VERY tight! should not come undone - mine doesn't. bought myself a second hand 5/8x3/4 Whitworth long combination ring spanner to fit the nut. It is about 300+mm long. I have had my Tregg a long time so the nut may now be metric.

Would that be defeating the purpose and design of using the Tregg system??

The Tregg hitch is NOT the best hitch system to use with stabilizer bars.

The best is the standard 50mm ball. This combination is the best for on-road use where you do not require extreme articulation but want a balanced car and trailer combination.
If you need extra articulation, then the Tregg hitch will give you this, but for the 80% of the time that you are on the bitumen, then the addition of stabiliser bars gives you the best of both worlds, but you need to remove the bars as soon as you hit dirt roads with humps and washaways.

HI Everyone

Thanks for your replies - we are new to this, I lost the post and could not find it again

We have placed the order for the Jayco outback swan - cant wait to get her now we are pretty excited.


The problem is we currently have a 2006 Klugar we are worried about the weight pushing the back end down. We cant get airbags because of the set up. So thats why we were thinking about stabilizers

BUT we do want to be limited to only driving on bitumen. Obviously we wont be doing any Extreme off roading but we will be hitting dirt and gravel tracks
