Hello people,
We are thinking of purchasing a campervan and like the expanda series. It will not be brand new and looking at a 16-49-1 series. I am also passionate about cycling and would like to know if Bike racks can be attached to these models?

hi guys I wa having a look at the type of van that u are looking at purchasing and it looks like you could just carry them inside the van when on the road. When the van is not attached you can buy the foldout bike racks that connect into the tow bar connection.

BTW how many bikes are we talking about.

Hi Tobi,

We have the model series you are talking about. I would advise not to attach extra weight to the rear of the van. We were thinking of doing something similar but Jayco advised that it could possible make the van unstable and cause sway.

Best advice either inside or on the tow bar.

Cheers Steve

I have a bike rake that mounts onto the tow hitch with the ball securing it. Cannot think of the brand at the moment. Will have a look tomorrow for you. Depending on how many bikes you intend on carrying you will need to take into account it may lesson your turning circle. The other thing to keep in mind is the ball weight load of the van and the bikes combined. :-)

Have a look around this website for ideas

http://www.expandasdownunder.com/forum.php

What sort of car you using to tow? If its a 4wd with a spare on the rear door then you can get a bike rack that fits over the spare.

The car is a Holden V6 VZ, which according to the manual has a tow bar weight of 160KG and a 1600KG GVM.

And what's the ATM of the Expander you'rew considering.
The difference between it's Tare and ATM is the maximum you can add to the van including water, LPG, Bikes, cloths, food, etc etc.....

If you are passionate about cycling Toby don't go there.
I am passionate about cycling & my expensive precision built bike as well & I can't help but criticise people who put bikes on the back or front of vans.
It just #!*^_ them.
Put them in your car where they will be cared for in a proper manner.
Sun, dust, rain, road grit, stones, vibration, theft. The list of reasons why you should desist from putting a bike on the outside of your van are endless.
Don't worry about what it will do to the van, it is more of a concern as to what it will do to your bike.
If not go & buy a $50 K Mart special & stick it on the back as an ornament like others do & don't ride it more than 10 km a year.

Thanks, I do appreciate your comments. Passionate as in my bike only cost $1K when brought 5 years ago. :) MIght think about putting the bikes on the roof racks now, at least they will be a bit harder to steal.... right? ;)

Good idea Toby. Whether you pay $1,000 or $15,000 the bike needs to be cared for if you want to enjoy the ride. They will get a lot less abuse up there on the roof.
Putting your bike down where the road dust can get at it will just kill it & being passionate, you will notice the deterioration when you get on to ride it.
That road dust & grime is very abrasive. When my kids were in BMX & the Australian titles were on in Adelaide a bloke from up in this way put his bike on the back of a Falcon & drove to Adelaide. They reckon he had to change every bearing, cable & the chain when he got there. The grime even worked its way in where the spokes go through the rim. Makes you wonder how stuffed bikes are that go around Aus on the back of a caravan.
On our last trip we carried the bikes in the back of a Nissan Patrol on quick release locks bolted down to a flat floor.
Now we have a Ute & I am finally finishing of a box that will stand the bikes up inside.
A mate of mine also had a couple of $500 cheapies stolen off the back of his Coaster motor home while they slept inside.
When you are shopping around for a carrier there are ones that have the facilities for locking the bike on. They are the go.
Good luck & happy riding.
