Pulled into Normanton yesterday, I new I was getting extremely low on fuel, I still had a spare Gerry can with 20 litres, but I thought I would just make it, and save my self the trouble of pulling over untieing gerry, getting syphon etc, but honestly, as I pulled into the BP servo (on the right, as you come from Hells Gate) the Patrol cuts out ! I could of rolled the last 15 meters to the bowser, but both bowsers had cars already occupying them, so I stop about 10 meters short, once the other cars had finished I tried in vain to get the ol'girl started and get the remaining 10 meters. So there I am agonisingly close, with starter motor whizing over but no luck, this of course gets the attention of the two fellas working there, and raises a chuckle between them.

So for the next 10 or 15 minutes I remove gerry can, syphon contents into patrol, bleed fuel filter, get the ol'girl fired and finally cover the remaining 10 meters to the bowser, all the while being watched by the "never made a blue" smirking locals, without one offer of assistance, I then purchase in excess of $250 worth of fuel, when I go into pay, covered in dust and sweat and not much humour, I get.....'leave it a bit fine did ya mate'

Ha......Bloody hilarious......:)

Cheers....Browny

You obviously made a conscious decision not to stop earlier & top up with your Jerry can.
You wouldn't have been any happier if they had helped you & then given a bill for their labour!

Shaker,

err....um yes, my decision my fault, my everything! I get that, but just maybe a "gee what a bummer" 'would ya like a push' are ya right mate, anything but sniggles and sly remarks.

Have we resorted to charging for a little chop out these days?

All I needed was someone to get up me for blocking a bowser, and I would of thought I'd done the Dorrothy and returned home to Melbourne!

If he hadn't had 20 litres of spare fuel, I may have given a completely different answer.
He took a risk & lost!
Also as mentioned in a reply below, it wouldn't have been hard to ask for a push.

As I posted here some time ago, I put unleaded in my vehicle in a country town, I then had to push it clear of the forecourt by myself, nobody offered to help, so what!

Sorry BrownyGU but I am just laughing at your bad luck, I do hope you don't mind. Murphy's Law they call it..... In all seriousness though you would have thought that at least some one there would have helped you push the vehicle into the bowser, it wouldn't have been too hard, geez what's the world coming to, pity there wasn't another servo close by that you could have just driven straight through and gone else where, that would have put the grins on the other side of the faces. LOL

one of the first things that you should have taken into account was the fact that by letting your fuel get so low you risk the very real chance of sucking up all the crap in the bottom of the fuel tank. Potentially blocking filters. You took a risk, lost and someone, who has probably seen this scenario countless times, had a larf at your laziness. Wouldnt have taken 5 minutes to get jerry can, fill up and on ya way. We all do things we wish we hadnt have. Its called learning. Glad you had no troubles restarting your car, but as anyone on this forum will tell you, dont let your fuel tank get very close to empty. Outback humour......city folks are just so serious.

Why would letting the vehicle get so empty cause it to suck up the crap in the bottom of the tank? Dosnt it always suck from the bottom of the tank no matter how much fuel is in the tank?

Yes, on most vehicles the intake is about 4 inches from the bottom, there is always a risk of sucking up crap - which is why you need to change your filter regularly.

hi nick
this is a myth that these guys believe in
about sucking in dirt only when your tank is near empty
the fact is the fuel guage moves up and down with the fuel level and dirty or contaminated fuel sometimes does take awhile to settle to the bottom usually after a stoppover
water will generally go almost straight to the bottm of a tank and start coming through immediately depending on the quantity

but the suction pipe is in a fixed position right near usually with 25mm of the bottom of the tank at all times
and the other facts are that dirty fuel is heavier than clean fuel including water and therefore will go to the bottom of the tank and stay there to be sucked up almost straight away
rancox 265
your statement that the suction pipes are 4inches from the bottom is a joke as if that was the case there would be a lot of tanks still with 20 or more liters of fuel left in them and the guage would be showing at least 1/4to 1/3 of a tank left
sorry rancox i have had too many tanks in pieces over the years as a farmer to swallow that
if you have a tank with the suction pipe 4 inches off the bottom then it must be one that has been poorly made
not having ago at you just pointing out a couple of things that i know are not quiet right based on years of experience cheers barry

Maybe they could have filled up one of their spare cans and let you put enough fuel in so you wouldn't have had to go through the drama of using your own jerry can ect.

Don't worry mate as long as you have a safe trip, you can laugh about it later.

Hi BrownyGU , I feel sorry for you and I would not have been happy either with the smart asses , at least they could have helped . I purchased fuel at that service station last year and they did not seem to be friendly then . It looks like even in the bush no one helps anyone now . For 64 years I lived in the country and people helped one another but the bad attitude of stuff you I am ok has even got as far as Normanton . I hope you have a better trip from now on .

Browny.... smile and smell the roses, it would of been funny watching and I would of got a kick out of it as well.

Why would you want 3 people trying to do the job of 1 person.... now were you cranky because they were laughing at you or because you ran out of fuel.

Had a similar thing happen on the Birdsville Track last year where a Hilux coming towards us a few kilometers got a flat tyre..... we heard across the UHF him talking to his mates "Yeah don't worry, you's keep going" in a grumpy voice....

When we approached him we were the third vehicle in a convoy with a camper trailer.... we slowed to about 40Kph as the rest 500m in front did.

When we went past he had a flat R/H rear and as we went past he picked up a stone and through it at us..... obviously having a bad day.

He mist us by at least 100m but then the knob got on the radio and abused us for not slowing down and kicking up dust and stones..... I got on the radio and kindly informed him "your the one with the flat not me and next time pull of the road and change his tyre instead of on the road...... Had to laugh.

No use getting upset if you don't ask for help... next time if you want help ask.

A few years ago we were just about to head off from Adelaide into the Northern Simpson and I filled 1 of our 140Lt tanks with unleaded petrol.... put in about 70Lts and the guys at the workshop attached to the servo got a laugh and said don't worry it's happened a lot before.... we had a laugh...they had a laugh and of we went.

Well we are all different I guess, if I see anyone on the side of the road, with some sort of an issue, I always stop and see if they need anything, even if it is as simple as changing a tyre, I'm pretty happy that no one has responded by throwing rocks at me either.

Why was I angry?

Mate I'm stuck in there servo, with no fuel and all they can do is laugh and snigger, but happily take my money once I get going? I thought it was poor form on there behalf. Maybe thats just my lack of humour?

Browny.

I think there is a difference in helping someone who needs help and someone who doesn't..... is I stopped for everyone who I saw everyday with a problem I wouldn't get any work done or get to where I'm going.

You were safe as you were close to help if needed..... if you were in the middle of nowhere with nothing around for kilometres then that's different.

If I saw someone with a flat tyre who looked like the needed help in the sticks I would help but in a city no.... they have a phone and people close by to help if needed.

It was a risk you took, you knew it was nearly empty... what's the difference if you stopped 10 kilometres or 10 meters from the bowser.... did you expect them to come and help you 10 kilometres away.

Why did you need help as you seem to be organised and had everything under control.

Was it more then a 1 person job.

Mate next time I'm washing the bugs of my windsreen I hope your near by to help.... I hate doing the passenger side....LOL

Mate your rambles about sticks and cities and stuff is doing my head in, they weren't just some random passers by, they worked or possibly owned the servo where I had come to a stop!!!!!!!!

Don't you think it would have been in there interest to at least see if I needed a hand?

And don't try and make out I'm some sort of hopeless cry baby who needs a hand with every little thing, because I'm telling you it isn't the case.

I hope I'm around when you next need a hand too!

QUOTE [I hope I'm around when you next need a hand too! ]

No use threatening people ....smile and laugh at you mistake and don't blame others for your misfortune, take responsibility of your actions.

If your not hopeless and a cry baby then why did you have a whine if you didn't need help or did you expect them to jump!

It seemed you had everything under control so why 3 people to to a 1 person job.

No more to say...... they were wrong and it wasn't your fault that you ran out of fuel.

Yes they should of helped so you could sit down and do nothing..... then charged you the $80 per hour x 2 for the time it took them to rectify a problem that was no fault of yours.

Hate to tell you china things have changed since to 40's.

OK,

I know I'm wasting my time, but hey I'm a sucker for punishment.

First of all, I don't make my threats from behind a keyboard.

"I hope I'm around when you next need a hand too"

So I could just laugh and do bugger all! is what I meant

quote "Smile and laugh at you mistake and don't blame others for your misfortune, take responsibility for you actions."

When in this whole rambling nonsense, have I once blamed others for my mis fortune?

"If" your not hopeless and a cry baby"......blah blah blah

All I've ever said is that, I thought it was poor form that the owners/employees of the servo, preferred to laugh and snigger at MY stuff up, rather than give me a chop out......!

If it was Joe Bloggs walking past the servo, go right ahead laugh ya guts out!

Quote..."No more to say.....they were wrong and it wasn't your fault that you ran out of fuel"

Once again, I've always stated......ahhh stuff it, if you don't get where I'm coming from by now, you never will, or your just playing the fool to wind me up, I seriously hope your just playing the fool, if so well done you got me!!!! If not.....good luck in life.

I've just gone over this part and typed it slower.......maybe that will help......lol

Browny,

You did say you were "extremely low on fuel", and the slight inconvenience of emptying your last 20L would have been better than doing possible damage to your injector pump, as you ran out.

Doubt if there'd be many on this forum who wouldn't have done something just as funny. Me included.

Also think you got a big slice of humble pie thrown in for free, with the $250 fuel purchase.

"Ha......Bloody hilarious......:)" Probably was....

Humble Pie, why the hell am I eating Humble Pie, I've admitted that it was all my fault, It's not as if I drove past numerous servos ranting and raving about how much mileage I get, blah blah blah, I don't need anybody's help, I'm a superstar etc, etc, and then come unstuck despite offers of help and so on. I was 10 meters from a bowser!!!!!! I didn't get it too wrong.

Ha your probably right, I gave thought to the starter motor hop for ten meters, but I'm towing a camper, and loaded up, I thought all I need to do now is strip a tooth on the ring gear or starter, to really liven the joint up, the local mechanic would've probably herd the commotion and brought down a deck chair and esky, and watch me try and organise a tow to his workshop.......lol

Dude! forget about about the running out of fuel thing 10 meters from the bowser, as once it happens it's in the history book of muck ups.

It's then how you recover the situation in front of the spectator peanut gallery that matters.

All you had to do instead of wasting battery trying to start the sucker, was put it 1st gear, foot off the clutch and 'key start' it up to the bowser and fill the mother up.

In the same manner as you do reverse key starts on inclines when you have stalled etc. Or how you SHOULD do it.

It wont damage anything, and makes you look and feel good, especially as you smile and' flip a bird' to peanut gallery 'commentator'.

I reckon the Australian thing to do would be to approach someone working there and say "G'day Tiger, can you believe my luck? (insert laugh). Reckon ya could give us a quick push?"

Surely most people would be happy to help you push it 10 metres reagrdless of the fsact that thought you were stupid or whatever.

Lighten up mate and good luck with future fuel calculations.

Browny,
100% with you. Country, city, anywhere, if someone looks like they need a hand, I offer/give them a hand. We aren't all perfect!!!!!!
Some bizarre responses.
Cheers
Matt

well .....neither my wife nor I would laugh, snigger gloat, try to justify or intellectualise about same, nor we would be stand by and let someone try to sigle handedly push a 2t? vehicle into the forecourt of a service station - we would HELP! .......wouldn't have to be asked, begged, cajoled, paid or anything actually.....we'd have just HELPED!

...some of you contributors on here need to have a good hard look at youselves.

Of course if you'd put a sign: 'MORON IN THIS CAR' in the back of your vehicles we could simply ignore you when you obviously need HELP! - whether asked for or not.......

I'm angry after reading this thread!

Sorry about your horrible, unAustralian experience BrownyGU

Happy days

George

It's the Australian way George to laugh at others misfortune (eg: Funniest home videos) & also the Australian way to help someone in need which I'm sure almost everyone on this thread would do given the chance. With a heavy trailer in tow it was not just a matter of a push to the bowser & if it looked like Browny was under control then it's also human nature not to interfere.
No need to get angry.
Cheers Craig.....

Just got back from Normanton Myself :-)

Barra were on the chew - It was great :-)

Lived there for ten years and what I find funny s that that Servo has no changed since I first went there in the early 80s.

Same owners Father & Son & Wife - Same Paint Job - Same Fuel Truck - Same Cluttered Driveway, same chairs sitting in the service bay always with a few people sitting down having a chat :-)

Same & more dust on the parts shelves inside etc etc - They are real Characters that's for sure, but they have always been good to me.

So did you ask for a push? Or did you just look at them thinking they were a bit lousy for not offering :-) My bet is if you asked for the help, you may have got it.

But they do have a dry sense of humor - they still call me the Fruit Bat after all these years :-) After all you have to have some entertainment and the tourists do supply ample.

Cheers Tony

Tony,

Ya spot on thats the place, going by your description I reckon it was the Father and Son, who got the enjoyment, and going by the responses to this thread, I've managed to drum up a bit of business for them.

No I didn't ask for a push, I didn't ask for any help whats so ever !

Just thought there actions odd.

This post has gotten way out of control, had a good look around while I've been here, and really enjoyed the area, even managed a few Barra myself!

Gonna need to top up before I go.....!

Cheers....Browny

You have got to be odd to live in Normanton :-)

They are actually very nice people, but I do agree, help would have been good.

Things must be slow and you were the entertainment for the day :-)

Good to see you caught some Barra - Tell them the Fruit Bat says Hi and they should have helped

Cheers Tony

LOL Browny, you probably would have got a similar response here, but then I'd offer to give ya a nudge with the bullbar of the Paj convertable :-) which is how I usually push cars around here.
Glad to see you're still travelling well anyway. :-)

Cheers

Perhaps you need to buy a set of certified scales to weigh your fuel each day as one prominent member here does-it would never happen to RM!

Seriously-its not good for your injector pump, not cos of the OWT about dirt in the bottom, but becuase its the same as dropping the bung out of your sump with the engine running and switching it off when the oil light comes on.
Your pump is lubricated by the fuel.

Fisho,

Yeah I realise it's not good for anything engine wise mate, but I thought I was gonna make it, the fuel gauge in the GU isn't the most accurate to judge, I do always zero the trip meter when ever I fill up, and I thought I was good for another 20km at least, but maybe headwind, sandy road, what ever........10 more meters and I wouldn't be here defending my self......lol

Cheers....Browny

Hi all . In the era I grew up in you helped anyone who was doing anything without having to be asked . If you did not you would have been told about it very quickly and would also have been sat on your backside if you had come up with any smart remarks . Even your family or fellow workers would not like you looking and not helping . The U JACK system is good until it is your problem .

Browny,
I guess you could have asked for help but have found offering help to some one in need gives every one a good feeling, even if a simple push.

That is not to mention the good laugh you all could have afterwards.

The way I see it is they are the ones who missed out, not you.

Rich

I thought it was funny, but then, back in the dim dark ages I once ran out of petrol on the servo bell ribbon. I got help purely so the bell would stop ringing!

Nowadays, I would have called myself an expletive deleted, expletive deleted in their earshot, asked for their agreement, asked to borrow a 5 litre can and pay for 5 litres of their best and agree with them that I had tried to cut it a bit fine.

Quote Max Smart; “missed it by that much”, and come up with the resolution to the problem all by myself and they didn’t have to get off their chairs and all of us could have had a laugh.

Hi Browny , I read the messages again and apparently some of these people have never made a mistake , in hindsight it might have been better to have put the 20 l of fuel in and drove to another place and filled up but you did not know the smart ass remarks you were going to get . You expect to get those remarks and no help in the cities but in the country it used to be different . I do not think you were unreasonable in your thinking . I hope to meet you somewhere on the road . How many kms has the GU done . Have a great time for the rest of your trip . How many kms left before the picnic is over and you are home .

BB,

283,000km trouble free mate, except she ran out of fuel once.....:)

Currently in Cairns, (unscheduled stop, due to a bloody tooth ache, maybe thats why I've been so cranky at the opposition?) I want to get up the tip, then down to Merimbula in the South coast of NSW before Chrissy with the family.

Grey Patrol towing a Goldstream wind up Blacky, keep an eye out mate!

Hi Browny , Make certain you have a good look at the top as there is plenty to see TI and Horn Is included if you are into military history . In 2002 44,000 vehicles crossed the Jardine R .I wish I was with you . Not like a friends of mine who recently flew to Weipa , next day drove to Seisia stopped there 2 nights and drove back to Weipa told me there was not much there and they had seen the lot . When we were there in 2003 with a group of 40 vehicles we were there 3 long days flat out and did not see the it all but as it was an organised trip we had to leave . It is a small world if you live at Merimbula , I have a mate that lives at Pambula also I have other friends around the area . I know of a few 3 L patrols that were not hand grenades but have not met anyone that had a bad one , only heard about them , I had a Hj60 with after market turbo that cost me plenty also a Crown SW in the early 70s that was a lemon ,

BB,

Yeah we plan to have a reasonable look around, no real hurry as long as the weather holds.

Should of mentioned mine is the TD6, (4.2 Turbo intercooled) We are originally from Melbourne, but have sold up there and have bought a block in Merimbula, my folks have been there for about 10 years and we always enjoy holidays there, so a sea change for us, just gotta find some work once we get back ti's all!

Cheers....Browny

Browny, if ever I get to Merimbula I will be looking for you to say Hi . I wish that you had put 4.2 L patrol as it would have shut some of the smart remarks up . Enjoy your trip . If you make a mistake or run out of fuel again don't put it on this site as most of them have never made a mistake . You know the old saying " if you have not made a mistake you have never done anything ".

I reckon that wasn't too bad an estimation, you were only 10M out on a tankfull. It is funny though and a perfect example of murphy's law. Actually I've seen a Jet aircraft pilot underestimate by further, he run out of fuel when taxiing back still 500M from the refuelling location. He didn't have a spare jerry can though..
