I am seeing camping recipes suggesting the use of dehydrated peas & corn – obviously they are much easier to carry than fresh vegies. I am aware of the dehydrated peas but I have not seen the dehydrated corn kernels anywhere. Can anybody tell me where they might have purchased packets of dehydrated corn kernels in recent times? Thanks.

Most supermarkets have peas & corn dried mix. Surprise is a common brand.

We brought our last peas/corn mix at IGA months ago now Gordon,
but at the time we noted that the range had gone down.

While Anaconda etc have fully made up meals we find them grossly overpriced.

Also there were no sliced beans and no corn by itself.

The price had gone up quite a lot and only peas were available in a no-name brand.

Also noticed that TVP is harder to get and even the sealed moist pasta mixes were discontinued.

As a base mix for dinner we often simmer the dried peas/corn in enough water such that after a few minutes when we add deb mashed potato and it consumes all the water, hence only using 1pot.

Unpackaged dehydrated corn kernels are available from one health food store in Hobart. We take a quantity of these on our winter odysseys and throw them into whatever we are cooking.

Good luck with your search. Kathie

Thank you ExplorOzites for your practical responses. In the supermarkets around my location, only the dehydrated peas are available. They come in two brands: Surprise and store brand – both the same peas but the Surprise peas cost around 3 or 4 times the price of the others. Have tried both and there is no difference other than the price and by the look of the wording on the packages, I suspect both made in the same NZ factory. Curiously, the peas and corn combined are not available. I was hoping to get the corn on its own – as I think I have seen it a long time ago - for various recipes. I will follow up on health food stores for the corn kernels – thanks for this.
I am aware of soy meal which can be used instead of mince meat and of course, the packaged meals. The latter do not interest me as they are expensive and relatively unpalatable. Ideal if one is hiking for a few days but that is not our situation.
As a matter of interest, does anybody know of any other dehydrated product – apart from soy meal, instant potato, dried onion, parsley and the like and complete meals?
On the matter of instant potato (aka ‘Deb’) we have found the ALDI product to be much cheaper and more acceptable than the better known brands. It also contains more in a packet than the others. For travel, we have emptied the dried potato (several packets) into a plastic jar, added dehydrated onions and garlic (both flakes) as well as some dried mixed herbs and dried parsley and then stirred well. Thus, when it comes meal time we simply spoon into a bowl and add a small amount of butter and water for a reasonable mash potato serving.

Have you considered drying your own? I dry large batches of just about anything, frozen veggies I just let thaw, drain, then dry, green beans, corn, even the mixed chunky winter veg. The cauli goes discoloured but reconstitutes ok. Also do mushrooms, tomatoes, any fruit. I also dry soups, bolagnaise sauce and casseroles. The cost of the food dryer vs the cost of comercailly dehydrated food is soon justified.
