This generator comes on sale at Aldi tomorrow so looking for some quick replies people! :) We are looking a this generator
http://aldi.com.au/au/html/offers/2827_19123.htm
would like to run our TV and Air con when required in our campervan. Does this mean I connect this generator to our internal inlet? Its light weight and maybe too nousey to run close to the site? Weather proof? etc etc and suggestions about this particular generator? Does it seem like value for money?

This generator would run the tv but not the aircon unless it is rated at less than 900w.
cheers....oldbaz.

Hi Toby, You would run your tv but the air con might be a bit much to ask from it. As for value for money you get what you pay for, If it's cheep then it's cheep. I would see how much power you are going to use with the tv air con lights etc and then you can work out the size you will need to handle it. Cheers Andy

Being an inverter type it and that power definitely won't run the aircon and it may not run the TV. Good news is that being Aldi you can buy it and take it back for a full refund.

Looked at it and it carefully doesn't say its a sine wave item.
Also noise output appears high - whats that 94 on the side in the picture ?
Give it a miss.

"Sound power level LWA/Uncertainty K:89 dB (A)/0.96 dB(A)"
At almost 90dB it's going to be noisy.
And what about spares in 18 months time?

Hi Road Warrior
They are tested to quite different specs / distances from the product , so its hard to compare , also differences in type of "db" used.
You can be sure though that price you aren't going to better the Honda's etc.

at only 900W you won't be able to run your aircon - need a minimum 2.4.
and as another reply mentioned, it doesn't say anywhere in the ad whether this is a true sine wave generator or not.
my advice would be to stay
well clear of this deal...

Depends on the aircon, my Honda 20i will run my Aircommand Wren which needs 1600w continuous but will not run my mates Dometic which needs 2400w continuous. Starts it and runs for about a minute and then the overload kicks it out.

But obviously he doesn't want to spend $1700 on a high quality product that has parts availability 10 years down the track.
We have 4 Honda EU20i's in our service vans with the oldest coming up to 6 years and it's never missed a beat.

I forgot to add that I am 53 & have NEVER bought a TV for
home or in particular travelling.
I should add that I have been given a few hand me downs over the years but there is no way they will be going bush with us.
I am determined to go to my grave having never bought a TV.

Take no notice of the "brand snobs"!
I have been using a Chinese Yamaha knock off inverter generator for a long time with no issues.
For $349.00 it is
well worth a try, particularly as Aldi are very good with warranty return or exchange.

Hi Toby,
You say "maybe too nousey to run close to the site". Hopefully if you do get one and find it too noisy to be close to your site, you will also find it too noisy to put anywhere near your camping neighbour's site. :-)
Cheers,
Val

So I shouldn't have bought my GMC 750W two stroke generator for $99 from Bunnings five years ago then? Despite the fact that it's still running
well after many, many hours of use and has served my purpose admirably. I should have spent $1400 and bought a Honda instead although it would have done no more for me than the GMC - yes... I see the error of my ways now.

I'm with you Nigel, you got rripped off though, I only paid $98. I bought it for lights and to trigger the gas hot water on the occasion of blackouts. It works great, last two times the power has come back on when I got it out and put the fuel in.. you wouldn't bother spending big bucks for standby so it's horses for courses.

"you got ripped off though, I only paid $98"
Curses! Those damn salesmen were just too clever for me! :)
"it's horses for courses"
Exactly.
Mine is only used for battery charging when I'm bush. I take a large AGM battery which runs my
camp (I might be out in a remote site for 2 or 3 weeks) and the GMC and a smart (stupid!) charger keep the battery going. Even if the gen failed it wouldn't matter much, I could either do without most of my 12V stuff or run the vehicle and do a temporary hook up to charge the AGM. To pay $1400 for a generator to do that would simply be a waste of money.

Well fellow threadsters : I to had a gmc 9 '' grinder now binned ,petrol water pump binned , cordless drill ", " & so on . you dont need to buy the best that money can buy , just a fair price for a fair thing, it all come down to how much you use it . I have a brand name generator it runs my drill , water
bore , small welder and has bun so for many years
& is still goes
well , starts every time . I to use to think that the cheapies was a good option but as I said i,m
well over that .
I would rather buy good s/hand .
P.S buy Australian & keep your mates in work !!!!!!!!
