Waeco, packing for the first time

Hi all,

I have a CF-50 Waeco (digital read out) Im going on a trip this weekend,

I will have some chicken, BBQ pack and other goodies normal stuff you would take for 3 days and nights...

since this will be my first trip where I have a lot of things as I normally take it on day trips that I dont really need to worry about temp..

Can I grab some advice on packing my fridge, some examples?

I have the main storage area and a small chiller area for butter ect..

Thanks guys and Girls

Just pack it in. It's a fridge just like you have at home only a chest type. Naturally, the lowest part of the fridge should maintain the coolest temperature. Use the more suseptible foodstuffs like chicken first. Just aim at keeping the internal temperature of the fridge at between 0-4C. I'm presuming you have a dual battery set-up to provide adequate power or will be travelling during the days as these fridges may draw 2 Amps or more an hour from your battery (they will cycle though so won't drag the full 2 amps an hour but it can dramatically affect the ability to start your vehicle in the morning if operating a single battery).

If running this on a standard single battery, monitor the fridge, try and keep it out of the sun within the vehicle and in the evening and turn it right down to conserve energy, covering the fridge with extra insulation like a blanket (Keep the motor area clear though).

Enjoy.

Hey Mick,

Thanks for your input I shall wack all the meat at the bottom and all the other goodies on top.. It comes with a little wire divider so I might just put that on top of the meat so nothing else is touching it. I just needed a little more reassurance about the temp.

I have a dual battery set up, An AcDelco 97 Amp Hour Deep Cycle Battery. So I have a feeling I shall be fine for my weekend away.. :D

Thanks again for your advice Mick

Run your fridge down to the requred temp before putting in your stock. Also best to pack the night before whilst still on 240v. Then just before departing switch over to 12v.

X 2.

We pack our meat and "soft" stuff in plastic containers prior to putting into fridge. Saves on cross contamination from splitting packaging and crushing soft stuff. Also makes it easier to get what you need quickly without having to empty out the fridge to get at what you want, it will always be at the bottom.

We keep drinks on one side of the divider and food on the other. No hunting for a cold one when wanted. The dairy section gets the marg, eggs and cheese and Vegemite.

Maybe not necessary for short trip, for longer I vacpac meat down and freeze flat as I can. This takes up less room and freezing first helps your fridge along. Food lasts longer even unfrozen in vacpac. Those zip lock bags are also great and will do much the same thing. I use them for everything like leftovers as I find plastic containers take up too much room. However I never trust beetroot in anything!

Dns,

Mate for a long weekend ya can't really go wrong, cooling it down while on 240 volt at home is a good tip, cryovacking and so forth only needed if your on an extended trip. Using the divider is the go, I have a 40ltr Engel, with no divider, and I'm continually emptying half the contents looking for that elusive coldy, it becomes even more of a chore the more coldies I have!

Cheers....Browny

Gday Darknstormy

Ive got a waeco 60 and we dont use the dividers. We have brought a couple sets of clip lock storage containers. We put different stuff in them from lge containers to small ones and a skinny one for cut up lettuce, meat veg and all the othere bits go in the bulky ones. The bonus of these is that they stack quite nicely in there with still leaving a bit of room for a few cold ones. 1 rule we have with drinks is you pull one cold one out you put in a warm one. Always have 2/3 in so there is always a cold one. We pack it the night b4 we take off and chill it down. We generally run it at 2-3deg so its not having to wk to hard. Always know what your going to get out and dont leave the lid up for extended times as this will make your fridge wk harder ther for using more charge.

For me it shore as hell beats having your meat floating in the esky cause your ice has melted.

Have a great wend and enjoy.

Hey guys,

Well the camping trip went fantastic, and the Mambray creek camp ground was awesome..

I used the Divider and Click lock Sestema containers, I first put the meat on the bottom and then the divider on top horizontally. Until we opened the meat and the left overs went in the containers. Then I used the divider vertically to make it little easier to get stuff out... using the one drink out one drink in rule I found the fridge didn't really work to hard

The Weaco CF-50 never skipped a beat at 2 degs the whole long weekend with the ACDelco 97aHr it was perfect.

So I took a bit of everyone's advice on this one and it worked great

Thanks Everyone :D
