So, I've finally got hold of an ipad2.

What can I say, I'm just not impressed. Not really a computer. Too big to use as a camera. I understand the functionality of using it as a gps, but just seems rather big for that. And the privacy issues, for those that scream about facebook, can't believe more people don't complain about how much details apple want about your life and how much data they collect on you.

Wife got one last week. Wast of money IMOP. You cant print documents or anything to do with Microsoft Word or Excel. Naturally its made by Apple

As for privacy, remember years ago when the Government wanted to introduce the ID card and everyone was up in arms, what a joke, these days its all in Cyberspace

She has an I Phone and I think that is fantastic.

Wayne,
your assumption about not being able to use or print Word/Excel documents is incorrect. You need the correct apps to do so. Documents to Go and PrintCentralPro are two apps that allow transfer and printing of all you documents. I use both. There are others as well; some are just not very good.

when I went to look at Ipads, it was impressed upon me by the sales staff that it WASNT a computer per se?
I have an Iphone, and I reckon its friggin great other than reception being slightly down on my older phones. Handy to be able to jump on the internet while out and about in town.

And I dont know of any PC/Mac that can print? You need a printer to do that with any computer and Im pretty sure I can do it from my Iphone via wifi so I reckon a Ipad should be able to?

I know you need a printer but it has to be Apple Compatible. My Brother (as in Printer) will only print Photos from the ipad.

My Geek mate is looking into it for me.

Serena and I each have an ipad2 and we love them.. very handy when used as an ipad2, not a camera/ PC etc..
excellent for browsing the web when travelling, using apps, or using as an ipod..
very bloody handy indeed.

I have to agree with the original poster. Ipads just seem to be something Apple Fanbois drool over but when you ask them what they use it for they say: web browsing, emails, apps.....

Nothing productive or unique there.

If Apple want the Samsung Galaxy 10.1 banned (and they've succeeded in some places) then I reckon THAT is the Tablet for me.

cheers

(I have an Iphone which is great but the only Apple product I really love is my Ipod Classic. I hope that doesn't make me a Fanboi.....)

Hullo Al,

so far, the only tablet I own is in a packet of Nurofen.

personally, I can't see the use for them. My iPhone can check emails, use apps (weather, fuel sites etc for travelling, and news services) and it can make phone calls (!!).

The thing that puts me off an iPad is that Apple are having arguments with so many providers of services that they are cutting off their nose to spite their face.

I'll stand corrected here, but:

Adobe, no PDF files
Google, no heaps of stuff
Flash, animation/vdeo compatibility
Microsoft Office, no Excel (how do I track my share trading ??)

And have a good browse through the i-Anything threads on Whirlpool to see all the Fanbois gushing. When the iPhone 4 was released (yes I have one but I didn't stand in line) the Thread being posted by all the Fanbois while they were in the queue was embarrassing. Bunch of sissies.

Anyway, all in good fun. Isn't it great we have a choice.

I have an IPad 1 and realized when I purchased it that it wasn't a laptop but I have to say with the right apps I have been more than surprised with what I can do with it. I virtually never use my laptop anymore, I have a Zagmate keyboard case and Pages app which I use for any Word Processing or spreadsheet work. OK the lack of sub-files is a bit annoying but I work around that. I also purchased for $27 a five way camera attachment from Ebay it allows me to download from my SD card or attach a flash drive, I can also attach my video camera as it is via flash.

I am away from home currently and haven't bothered carting the laptop with me, love the way I flick the switch and its ON and ready to read the forums. I can connect via a WIFI hotspot on my smartphone which uses the prepaid data allowance or as I am away for three weeks this trip I have just recharged the sim which gives me 3gb for 30 days. I am a heavy user of the internet as I like to send photos etc back to my husband at home.

I would love an Ipad 2 so that I could use Skype, I don't have the camera in mine. I am hanging out for the Ipad 3 though as I believe it will deliver some real surprises.

Cheers

I bought an iPad 1 just after they were released. The best buy I've made in tech stuff.
Have travelled for months at a time & the laptop doesn't get used now. Use the iPad for - photos/emails/internet/navigation/mapping/moving map/GPS/spreadsheets/blogging/phone calls via skype/games/TV aerial tuning/music/ & heaps of other stuff.
You just have to know the right apps for what you want to do. Printing can be an issue sometimes - you need the right app - but on the road I don't have a printer anyway. What I do do is upload all my docs to Box.net & then I can just print it on my normal printer.
I am a PC man but do love the iPad. I do have an android smartphone & it doesn't compare with iPhones..

Sounds like you didn’t do your research before you forked out all your hard earned coin? Why would you want to use it as a camera? Yes it will work but the camera was designed for facetime and Skype not taking your digital photos around the country.

I have a IPAD 1 and love it, my work productivity has increased and it's much lighter than my laptop and it last forever on battery power. It travels with me pretty much everywhere I go. With the right apps you can do just about anything you can with a laptop! As for your security concerns you are in total control of what you put in and how much info you reveal.

Hi Gordon,

I am afraid I am a fan of iPads as well. I've used PCs since the mid eighties and switched to Apple when (because) Microsoft released Vista. I now have an iPad 2, iPhone, miniMac and iMac. They are all strung together with Apple Wireless throughout the house. Couldn't be happier.

Gordon
I have had an iPad One since they were released. At first I didn't appreciate it much. However, it has completely replaced all the virus ridden clunky mobile computing/navigation efforts that I had struggled with for years.
It has replaced printed books and newspapers, photo albums, maps, instruction manuals etc.
Give it time and you'll realise what a brilliant piece of kit it is.
You can't really blame Samsung for trying to copy it.

BTW I can't remember the last time I printed something.

Hi Gordon,

Started my computer experience with a Toshiba laptop and Windows, nothing but trouble, switched to Mac and have been happy ever since. I now have a 24 inch Imac, Ipad2 and Iphone4, just wish they made a tele, I would have that as well.

The thing that impresses me is the quality of their equipment, and their backup, first class.

The Ipad2 I think has to be evaluated for what it is, a very good tablet, and used as such I think it is excellent, I have a car mount for mine and as a bit of navigation equipment, I am impressed and I think it will only get better with updates.

As with most things it depends on what works for you, and all I can say Mac gear rocks my boat.

All the best Warren.

PS as a bonus no viruses.

I don't think this has been mentioned in this thread yet but the ipad2 is fantastic as a kindle type reader. I am an avid reader and normally take a lot of books with me when I travel which are heavy, take up a lot of room, and get damaged. This year I travelled with a heap of books on my ipad2 and it was fantastic. I ran out of reading material at Innamincka and downloaded a book using the Pubs wifi hotspot.

I also use it for emails, bill paying, gps, navigator, and as a way of keeping in touch with my kids using Skype, Heytell, Facebook. I also have loaded all my phone system manuals etc onto Dropbox for retrieval when required. I have also created a private folder on dropbox which all my kids have password access to so we can post photos etc which we can all see.

I love it.

Regard,
Bob

P.S. I think I got a bit excited then. A nice cup of tea and a sit down will do me good.

Interesting feed back. Fun to see the lovers, the haters and those who just let things be.

Must say, as an electronic reader, I reckon it rocks. Have gone a bit crazy with the book reading function of it. For me, I'm wondering if a kindle would do me just as well.

My work has been trialing a few different tablets & while the ipad users have been happy I was fortunate to be issued with a Motion PC instead which have found to be absolutely brilliant. For outside use it leaves the ipad for dead with far greater daylight viewing, works in the rain & even takes a drop from 1 & a half metres. With the inbuilt GPS it's the best plaform I've used for Oziexplorer mapping.
Cheers Craig..........

One of the other things about the iPad and other tablets that I have difficulty with is the price.

Three or four times the cost of a netbook with similar size screen.

Twice the cost of some 40" to 50" plasma tellies.

I reckon Apple are gouging.

I changed to Mac eighteen months ago and I would go back to PC. It is so much easier to use, is user friendly and a pleasure to use when compared to PC. We took a netbook away with us last year to Eygpt and it very nearly stayed there, nothing bu problems with windows home. I have just purchased an IPad in Hog Kong (I might add $150.00 cheaper) the thing is brilliant. Thank you vey much to the poster who set me on the correct road for the printing app.
