My mate is thinking of putting his 4b on the train in Vic and getting it off at the closest point to Lake Eyre. Where would be the best place to send the 4b too and what condition is the Lake in? Water, birds etc and how long do you expect to last?
Thanks Wato

Wato, you'll need to catch 2 trains to get anywhere near Lake Eyre. 1. Melb - Adel on The Overland & Adel - Pt
Augusta (I think they stop there) on either the Ghan or I/Pacific. Or get off in
Adelaide and drive from there. As mentioned in another reply, there are vehicle restrictions. So I think your mate might have to drive all the way. It's only about 17 hours...
Check out the GSR website.
Great Southern Rail - Taking your car
- Vehicle width must not exceed 2.20m
- Please refer to table below for height specifications
- Wheel track inner must be greater than 92cm
- Wheel track outer must not exceed 1.90m
- Undercarriage clearance height must be greater than 13cm
Cheers
Louie

The only
places that cars can be loaded or unloaded to/from the Ghan are
Adelaide and
Darwin and
Alice Springs. If you have anything on the roof then forget it. Not allowed.
Unless you want the Ghan experience then ndrive. We have takien our car on the Indian Pacific, The Ghan and the Queenslander. Fun times.
That's ours on the top. All 4WDs go on the top. You can see why they stipulate nothing on the top of the car. The photo was taken in
Alice Springs.

Yep, tell him to drive it.
I just did that trip and only had 8 days.
Melb.
Marree, Lake Eyre flight, C/Creek,
Birdsville,
Innamincka,
Cordillo Downs,
Broken Hill,
home.
Incredible trip but too short.
Yeah mate, Drive it, you'll never forget a trip like that.
