After watching the 2 ABC Eyre repeats my kids have been bugging me to go to Lake Eyre before it dries up. I know it is only about 30% full now but wonder if it is still worth seeing. I was there last year and took a flight with Wrights air which I would do again.
Has anyone been there recently and taken the flight. Also is the Ferry still in operation at
Cooper Creek? I suspect it will all dry up very quickly without a big refresh from up north.
Trevor at Wrights said the birdlife as as good as ever.
Any
feedback would be very welcome.

Hi Boobook
I have no information re Lake Eyre, but as for the
Cooper Creek ferry, yes it is still running. Patsy is down and I spoke to her has week and the mice have gone and the water is dropping slowly.
Cheers

Hi Boobook
At this stage they are not quite sure, but at least until mid January at this stage, even longer. Once the water does drop and not covering the
Birdsville Track, it then has to be safe enough for conventional vehicles (eg stock standard Falcons and Holdens) to travel without getting bogged before the ferry is then taken out of service again, which can be up to 10 days once the track is crossable by four wheel drive vehicles.
Cheers
Stephen

Boobook...
I've also just read that the
Marree Hotel is under new management...finally!!!!
It's been quoted as the biggest turn around in the Outback. (Wouldn't be hard considering the previous manager's style).
Let us all know how your trip goes because I might just squeeze in a quick trip before I go back to work in 2 weeks time.
Fab.
P.S....yes I know it's hot up there and the flies will be bad, but at least it won't be COLD!!!!

Flew over
William Creek and Lake Eyre on Wednesday this week(30,000ft though) and the South western corner still has a small amout of water but looked to be receding fast in the 10 days since I last crossed over. Should still be able to see water from the public access route in from
William Creek. The rest of the lake and Lake Eyre south are both now dry.

Flew straight over the Cooper inlet which still had water in it but heading towards
mungerannie hotel, too high to see bird life on the ground unfortunately and the
cooper creek was on the other side of the aircraft. I should have asked the co pilot. Will look again next week if we go the same way.

There were flood warnings out for the Cooper in Queensland during the week and BOM still has warnings current for the Diamantina and Paroo Rivers. And the wet has hardly started. The ferry might have a long run if the rain keeps up.
