My 3 way in the van and the portable freezes ice blocks in 38 plus. Travelled the Great Circle Route over two years and never had a problem.
I added a shadecloth screen on the side of the van when the sun hit in the afternoon and I put the fans in the behind the fridge with the thermostat to turn them on and off.

You have to be inventive.

My 3 way was able to keep my four Macadamia and Mango Weis Bars frozen all last weekend with day time temps up to 30.

-10 on 12v and -20 on gas.

The 3 ways are ok as coolers .
Never saw one that could regulate temperature to my satisfaction.
I like my beer at 0 deg (no more than a degree each way) – just above freezing. Only a compressor fridge will do that.

I doubt you can sucessfully get beer that cold these days. In recent years the breweries have gone to a much thinner can and they will burst at the slightest hint of freezing. They even burst just from the travel bumps. I have had to turn my fridge up a degree or two. Otherwise I found myself cleaning out the fridge once or twice every trip. This is certainly the case for CUB ( or whoever they are this week) products.

Mate I’m a beer connoisseur and I know my fridges.
If I crack a can and it makes a hiss it’s too warm.
In the name of science I just now cracked a can and dipped a thermometer into it, it’s minus 1 degree centigrade. Distilled water will freeze at zero, beer and cool drink will go a little lower.

When I said I know my fridges – only the fridges I own – 3 way Dometic, a 40 litre Engel and a CF 40 Waeco. I’m not a fridge technician.

I went the opposite. I specified my camper with an engel upright compressor fridge. Removed it, sold it, and replaced it with a dometic 3 way upright. No comparison. Engel chewed the batteries like there was no tomorrow. 210 watts of solar could not keep up. After 3 days on every occasion batteries were flat...300amh. Had solar regulator and batteries checked by an expert....all good.
Engel admitted that as an upright fridge that would hammer at a minimum of 75 amphrs per day when it got a little warm. It ran virtually the whole time. Fridge now chews gas cylinder every 3 weeks, but that's also using gas hot water and gas hot plates.
