G'day all,
Need some local knowledge or past experiences. I'm planning my trip to Kangaroo Island in March. We are heading around the coast and not sure whether to stay at Beachport or Robe, we are camping and will be fishing where we can. Any suggestions as to these two towns would be appreciated.
Cheers, Chapo

You can't go wrong with either. I liked Beachport better as it is smaller and seemed prettier but others may say different. A good 4wd drive track between the two but beware the beaches can get really soft....a lot of people stuck when I was there. Expensive to get pulled out too. Cheers

Both very good. I live not far from both places.

If you want "latte and the yuppy retirees and want to pay big dollars", stay at Robe.

If you want a good laid back reasonably priced, good fishing, go to Beachport, you can drop in to Robe and have a look around on the way to KI.

If you want a good free camping spot between Mt. Gambier and Millicent, pull in to a real little town by the name of Tantanoola, where the iconic "Tiger Hotel "is.
Camp is directly opposite, plenty of shade, dump point, toilets, barbeque and kids playground.

If there on a Wed. evening, she's snitzel night at the pub, $12.50 and you will really struggle to eat, they are gigantic.

Best free camp I have ever came across.

Cheers

Mchapo,

I stayed at theRobe Lakeside CP before Christmas and fully recommend it. There are also great places to camp in the surrounding National Parks. I haven't stayed there but Beachport would also be nice. It can get very windy though and is a bit smaller and quieter. Be sure to pick up the free 4x4 maps from the tourist outlets and do the coastal track between these two towns. Lots of fishing spots and you could ask the locals about crayfish.

gooday mchapo :I would look at beachport 2 good c/parks , jetty ,good beaches etc and I think is cheaper ( Robe over valued ) good fishing spots beachport to robe & if you like 4wding you'll just love it . check out the salmon hole just at the back of the town left hand end of the beach is good for salmon at times . as mentioned some of the beaches are soft but you dont need to drive on them , plenty of tracks in n/parks .

To me, without a doubt beachport over robe. Robe is far too crowded and over rated.

However, if you're in the are may I suggest perhaps Kingston Se. It's a very small town with some of the best sunsets in the world. It's only maybe 45-50 from Robe and I certainly feel it's a much better option than Robe.

Meant to say that the fishing is quiet good in Kingston too. Also there is a free camping spot near the Wyomi store if you're in a caravan. For some reason tenting is not allowed.

There's a reason why the locals call Kingston, Stinkston. It's largest beach is covered in at least 1 metre high seaweed. Think as - you wouldn't walk along it. Not the prettiest option in my book.

Pinks Beach is okay and as a result gets very busy.

Robe is busy over the peak 4 weeks of January but obviously for a reason, there's lots of nice places to eat and shops and it's beaches are delightful and you can drive along the glorious Long Beach for a day of surfing, swimming or just spectating. There are 4 + caravan parks, depending on whether you want shelter, sea front, dogs, indoor swimming pools etc

I do agree fishing is better at Beachport, love Salmon Hole, quite surreal. Also very good at Cape Jaffa, which is between Robe and Kingston.

Robe is a much prettier destination than Beachport, but I prefer Kingston SE to them both.

I agree with OJ.

That area is a very pretty part of the world, so it all depends on your expectations for accomodation, price, attractions, facilities, crowds and (in my case, at least) access to the beach.

Kingston SE gets my vote (and my money) every time.

Have a great trip!

We stayed at South End....C/van Park on the beach & they allow dogs. Very peaceful & not expensive. You can there drive to Beachport & Robe.

Been going to Beachfort for 30+ years - definately the best. Southern Ocean van park at Beachport is our choice. Best is that Beachport is in the middle with great 4wd touring both north to Robe and south to Carpenters Rocks and Beachport isn't a yuppy outpost like Robe is.
