I currently own a 1999 petrol GU Patrol which at times has a gear noise which will start at 1800RPM and fade out ar around 2100RPM. The noise will appear in any all gears at times although it maybe many weeks between hearing the noise. Once the noise is there, is may last until the vehicle is stopped or it may go away after a short period of time. Most times it requires the drive load to be taken off of the drive train for the noise to stop. Nissan have informed me that they are willing to pull it apart under warranty, but if they find nothing wrong I get the bill. Any info or advice would be appreciated.

Mick,
All patrols except for the 2.8 have a truck gearbox, they all make a gear noise at low rpm or low speeds, the reason for that is by design, the gears are not a fine cut as it would be in a sedan or lighter 4wd, they are made for strength.
Some are quiter than others but they all do it, the noise is like a gggrrrgggrg grinding noise at low rpm.
If you hear carefully you will hear the same noise in manual geared trucks and buses.

Mick, I had the same symptoms with a 1999 2.8 litre turbo diesel. Nissan were OK but initially were not too sure how to fix the problem. Eventually it was fixed but I was not told in detail what work was carried out. Nissan Australia should be aware of the cause of the problem and how to fix it.
