Might not apply to the Effie but on some vehicles you have to have your foot on the brake pedal to engage Park and to release the lever from Park. If you have been off-road could be a stick or rock or mud jamming up the linkage or a bent linkage underneath. Failing that the linkage could be loose or slipped on the shaft that goes in to the transmission. Without stating the obvious, make sure the park brake is applied and the wheels are chocked to prevent any movement in either direction.

My neighbour had the same problem last week, it was a stone caught under the linkage. Would not go into park.

Try looking their ,it may save a few $$$$$$s.

Margaret,

How is the oil level in the gear box?? Having had a 250 in the past I encountered difficulties with the transmission shifting due to low oil.

If you can't fix it, you are lucky there is a Ford dealer in Mount Isa.

Margaret,
have a look in your owners manual. Some vehicles have a hidden button near the shift lever that you can access to get it in and out of park.

Just guessing here Margaret, but could your batteries be getting low? To my way of thinking you cannot remove the key only because the vehicle is not in park - so that is the prime problem. Good luck with getting it resolved.

Margaret - The Just Answers website is reasonably good at providing answers to tricky problems with American vehicles. There's usually a number of qualified Ford technicians online at any time, prepared to assist.

I presume you haven't parked in a position where's there's a heavy load on the parking pawl (loaded and on a slope), or that you haven't parked with steering load on the ignition locking mechanism?
Both of these situations will prevent the park brake pawl from disengaging, and the key from being removed.

Cheers - Ron.

Oops, my bad, I misread your post. I thought you stated it wouldn't disengage park.
Yes, the key in modern vehicles won't come out until you apply the park brake. So the problem created by the park brake not engaging will prevent the key from being removed.

Cheers - Ron.

The common problem with the F250 seems to be the two bolts holding the park brake cable clamped to the steering column, often come loose - thus preventing the linkage on the transmission from being moved far enough to go into park.

hi marg
I too have an effy and like yrs is cable to the transmission.
there is an interlock between park and the key removal solinoid.
it is just possible the may be an adjustment from stopping it going into the park position.
will it go into park while moving forward or back at very low speed?
maybe you could try rockingr it a little.
or maybe try manually operating the linkage on the side of the gerbox.

BTW
nice rig
But what are you carrying?
looks very back end heavy.
have you thought of getting some airbags fitted to help the poor old rear springs?

I will follow and see what the effy dealer has to say

Thanks for your info, tried your advice, still will not budge.
The photo of the rig was taken on a slope and makes it look very back end heavy, have airbags already installed.
Thanks again for your info

Problem sorted. It was a small piece of tarred stone stuck right up under the cable at the transmission, it was out of sight, had to pull cable off before it could be located.
A very big thank you must go to the Mount Isa Ford dealership for their prompt and courteous attention which incurred no cost.
Thank you to all , we will be on our way to Camooweal tomorrow.
