Mate,
The Old Ghan Railway runs up through Leigh Creek, Lyndhurst, Maree then runs alongside the Oodnadatta Track, up to Oodnadatta - Finke etc. So the "new line" doesnt affect it anyway as it hasn't been used as the main railway line from Adelaide to Alice since ?buggered if I know, but the line was totally closed in 1980. So I guess my answer to your question is yes, parts of it. Grab a map of Great Desert Tracks SE Map that will explain your question. Also if your planning a trip up that way get a copy of Outback - South Australia & Central Australia by Stuart Nicol from the RAA in Adelaide, great book.
