G'day all,
Been shopping around for a while now for a new 4by. i want one that can do a good job off road (beach work, mundaring powerlines etc.)
I have about $10k to spend and i have narrowed it down to two vehicles, the 2000-2004 Mitsubishi Challenger and the 200-2004 Nissan Pathfinder.
So all in all, im just wondering which one you guys think will be the best off road, best everyday car and most fuel efficient.
i would probably be wanting one on LPG. I am only
young so i don't have the most amount of money, so preferably the one that will cost me less to run.
However, off road ability is a big factor in my decision. I have considered bigger vehicles such as Pajero, Discovery, Jackaroo, but they all have wayy too many k's on them and are pretty expensive.
Thanks, James

James, I have no direct preferences when comparing those 2 vehicles. If you are buying one that is on LPG and has done it's fair share of kilometres you need to be careful. Vehicles that have had LPG fitted and are not monitored regularly with regards to state of tune can suffer premature engine damage. LPG is a much dryer fuel and engines often suffer valve damage. The attraction of LPG is obvious but sometimes LPG vehicles require more maintenance as you have introduced an after market fuel to a vehicle it was never designed for. At $10k for an LPG vehicle such as one of the above it would not be a long term option in my opinion.

In stock form a Challenger will probably have the edge off-road. Pathfinder will likely be more refined on-road. And in petrol I think the Pathfinder has the nicer motor too.

Hi James,
We had a late '03 Challenger for about 4 years. My wife used it as her supermarket trolley during the week and then we used it to go exploring and camping on weekends. We found it very capable in both the mountains and in the sand (desert or beach). We also found that it was big enough to sleep in if the weather was nasty!
While I can't give you a blow-by-blow comparison against a Pathy, I'd have no hesitation about giving another one a go if the circumstances were right. We upgraded to a 100 series 'Cruiser when we bought a van.
Hope that helps.
Cheers,
Chris.

I had a Pathfinder on LPG that did around 350,000 kms and the engine was still great when I traded it. That was the 3.3 litre motor. I had very few issues with the car and it was handy enough off road. You'll get about 14l/100km on petrol and 17l/100km on gas. There are Challengers in my club and they are good too from what I have seen. Get the one that is in good nick with the lowest kms. I have seen Challengers not lock into 4wd on a few occasions.
