Hi All
I am trying to get advise on a diff centre for a 1990 FJ80 Cruiser
I am in Adelaide but happy to get help any where as I can arrange transport I have searched wreckers here but they can't help unless willing to part with major cash
I have been told to have it rebuilt but my mech recons it is way to expensive
and to try and find a second hand one but me thinks I could be in the same position
would like to have it rebuilt the main bearing is very noisey and where the tail shaft connects I have quite bad slop side ways
need some suggestions
cheers
Wizza

Why don't you ask a diff specialist for an opinion/price? Depending on the state of the gears, it may just need the pinion/carrier bearings replaced.
You may be able to get your mech to remove and install it and get them to do the rest.

Hi Wizza,
I agree that you should seek some professional advice from a diff /gearbox specialist and get an estimate on repairs.
Yes you could go to the wreckers but chances are that an 80 series diff will have done as much work as your one and not last or have similar issues.
Unfortunately diffs are one of those things, unless you have the required tools to rebuild a diff then you are at their mercy. There will be plenty of people here telling you that with a little bit of knowledge you can replace the bearings and all will be ok. If the pinion bearings have collapsed hence the tail shaft slop the you need someone to look at mate. There is a bit more to setting them up than meets the eye. Good luck.

cheers
