Jawilga Pool is one of the semi permanent water holes the dot the length of the
Sturt Creek north of Billiluna. The majority of this land now sits in the
Sturt Creek Station, part of the Kidman empire still. Skeen is reached by taking an unmarked detour of 500 metres from the Old Canning Stockroute north of Billiluna. I was very much reminded of stretches of the Darling and Murrumbidgee by this nearly dry section of water.
The abundance of water in many fine pools was what led the early
explorers and settlers to the area with the likes of
Warburton, Hahn, Rudall and Buchanan all using its length to base forays into the harsh Tanami and Great Sandy Deserts to the south. In 1897, David
Carnegie traced its route before launching into the Tanami on his return journey to
Coolgardie.
This narrow but
long pool was reminiscent of many stretches of the Darling and Murrumbidgie, its milky waters no doubt holding a lot of white clay in
suspension. To the southern end
the pool ended in fields of grasses. We surprised many ducks, a heron and pelicans with our arrival. We had lunch on the banks beneath the trees.
