This excellent
free camp is where the old Bruce Highway crosses the
Calliope River via a low level bridge. The area was bypassed by the highway many years ago but is maintained by the local council as a
free camping area.
Toilet blocks are provided on both sides of the river. Pedestrians can still walk over the bridge that is also regularly used my fishermen.
There is space for a large number of campers on both sides of the river. The western area is reached from the Bruce Highway immediately on the west side of the elevated highway bridge. The turn is
well signed and is the same turn that is taken to reach the Port Curtis Historical Village complex.
The eastern side is reached by a
well signed turn into Old Bruce Highway about 3 km or so on the eastern side of the elevated highway bridge. As the highway runs about east west in this area both turns are to the south side of the highway.
Maximum stay 48 hours.
