An
airstrip was built at this point during the mineral exploration boom of the 70's and 80's. This pit was excavated to get to the white gravel that was used to top both airfield and track. Decades later, the pit has become a
dam and a good supply of water for local birds and animals. Unfortunately the ubiquitous camel seems to be the major beneficiary. We saw several dingos and a good number of birds in the area. The
dam would supply water throughout a harsh season and still had good water over both years that we passed (July 2009 and June 2010).
