Kangaroo grass is native to Australia and Africa. It is one of the most widespread native grasses in Australia growing in every state and territory, from interior arid regions to the alps and coast. It once dominated tussock grasslands in eastern Australia. Kangaroo grass is a deep rooted perennial grass with a soft, tussock habit. The leaves are long and thin and as they mature, turn from green to red/brown/purple. It can grow to a height of 30-100 cm. Attractive rusty-red seedheads form throughout the summer. Seed heads are usually 30-50 cm long on stems with dark nodes.
Flowering start in October.
Identification
The main flower colour is other. Rusty red colour of mature leaves.
Uses
A good quality grass for grazing, but does not withstand heavy grazing. Also used for landscaping and land rehabilitation work.
