Does anybody have an opinion on the merits of a de coke and valve grind on a petrol engine with this usage ?

Gooday Ray : Since we have used good fuel ONLY from BP & Caltex 98 etc in our v8 petrol L/C it has improved economy & performance , so i think the de coke might be waste of money IMO

At 300,000 k's I wouldn't touch it, if it ain't broken.
If you do decide to recon the heads, I would consider slipping in a new set of big end bearings.
But if it isn't burning oil and oil pressure/ compression is good, leave well alone.IMO

hi ray
is it using any oil

if it is
it will mean you need to fit new rings and then maybe a set of pistons so where does it start and end at that amount of k's
what is its build date
some times you have to way up the gains
against the outlay and whether you can do the work yourself or have to pay a mechanic ????
cheers

Hi Ray.
Cannot comment specifically on your question but can tell you that I had a regularly serviced 1998 petrol Prado that had clocked up 318,000 untroubled kms when, after 9 years, I traded for my current LC 200 series V8 GXL.
It was a wonderful vehicle and was still humming along when I traded.
Travelled everywhere (bituman & dirt) and regularly towed a 1.5t van without difficulty.
Only upgraded when we changed to our current van of 2.2t.
Check to service records if you can.

Peter

If well serviced they will easily do 1/2 million klms. I have seen numerous 96 to 02 series one and two prados with 400 thou on them and still going strong, no major repairs. There a top motor, extremely reliable, tad thirtsy. Im on my 3rd prado now, two 90 series one V6 one turbo diesel and I had more trouble with the turbo diesel and none with the petrol. I have now gone to a 120 series prado V6 petrol and again so far faultless in regards to any engine issues.............Like said above, If its going ok, not using oil and well serviced then I wouldn't be putting a single spanner to it except for regular servicing...........
