Toyota Hilux chip

Morning. Has anyone chipped a 2003 1KZ TE Hilux turbo diesel? Performance? Fuel economy?

Cheers

Greg

Greg, That model doesn't produce a gain that I think is worthwhile and getting straight to the point you are better off with the D4D Turbo Diesel which came in 2005.

I had that vehicle you are asking about and went through the same,
I didn't get the feeling from any of the chip suppliers that the gains would give me the 'wow' feeling. Add to that the low towing capacity and it was a no brainer.
So I sold it and got a V8 landcruiser, no problem with power now.

I chipped a 1kz in my Prado, although the performance increase was noticeable, it wasn't until I fitted a 3" exhaust that the vehicle virtually gained another gear!
This is most noticeable when towing our Vista RV Crossover, increased torque is amazing.

Was it the chip or the exhaust that gave you the best gain?

The exhaust seemed greater, but I think they work in tandem!
The exhaust is 3" all the way through including the dump pipe.
It is a different car now!

Thanks Shaker.
I have a Beaudesert exhaust system which gave a noticible performance increase. Think I'll give the chip a miss and be happy with what I have.

Thanks all.

Gidday Shaker,

I have the same 4wd/camper combination as you. I'm quite interested in your rig's performance up long hills. At the moment I'm back to about 60 on some hills. I don't mind slowing down on hills, but it's embarrassing being overtaken by granny in her 1979 Sigma :D

Which brand of chip/zorst did you use?

I have a DP Chip & a Sterling exhaust system.
Sterling was the only exhaust that I could find that was 3" right through, Beaudesert, Taipan, Redback etc. all only had 2 1/2" tailpipes.
I think that the chip & exhaust work very well together & would highly recommend the combination.
Performance up long hills was the most amazing difference!
