I gather there was a case of big bill? I also assume it was considered out of proportion to reasonable , given remoteness of service and higher prices in NW.
are they only mech in town? was there any justification given? no quote/estimate in advance?
......I was charged $100 for a new cap off my Patrol brake fluid pot in Kalg once- It was explained to me that it was $15 for actual cap and fox overnite up from
perth! , the other $90 or so was for mechanic wages..otherwise he can walk to
mine over the road and get $100,000 starters a yr to get out of bed! I paid up!
Tradie wise, it can cost up to $90-100 an hour labour, +parts with a callout fee sometimes as
well..
PS: thats not the only thing thats up to $100 an hr in Kal!
is it worth writing to RAC and ARB to advise them of the facts/details ? ....as I'm sure they wouldnt want their name /liscence/agency associated if it can be shown this is occuring. Tried consumer affairs?
MG.

Those prices are not too bad for remote areas Mike.....I've recently paid $120 ph in
Canberra for a 4WD specialist mechanic. Interestingly in
Weipa last August I only paid $80 ph for a mechanic to do some work for me so I guess the remoteness and proximity to alternative work in the mines varies across the country.
