Very good article about internet options when travelling but, I would like to add that you can purchase a wi-fi device from Telstra (no, this isn't an ad) for about $99 which has (I think) 5GB of data download to be used within 3 months.
The beauty of this device is that it is free-standing and you can use up to 5 separate devices at the same time. We carry 2 iPads and 1 laptop, so this device is indispensable for us. We've worked out that the cheapest rate for recharge is $150 which has 12 months time usage and 12GB of downloads.
This device has its own sim card, so you can then prepay for whatever amount you think you will need. We've used one for nearly 2 years and, because we have an iPad each, we can both be "on air" together, doing our individual things.
I'm hoping this info will help fellow travellers and that I've quoted reasonably correct figures.
Catch you on the road!!!

Telstra mobile wifi device (about 2 yrs old)

Hi Dianne
I've been looking at these, and the one you have pictured is now $79, with 5gb data, and there's a new one at $149 on the 4G network, also with 5gb data. 12gb with a 365 day expiry is now $180...
We're planning on getting the $149 gadget as it has better connection speeds, so hopefully will work better in those areas with a poorer signal. We will be running an iPad, 2x iPods, laptop and wireless printer. Maybe not all at the same time, but at least the option is there. The other benefit of going with the dearer model is that we won't lose too much connectivity if we're all online at the same time....
Bigpond do a similar device, however you have to
sign up for a contract - 1 or 2 year options. Telstra is pre-paid.

Kym
