I presume you mean a 4,000 lb not 40,000 lb.
If you want to use it for recoveries of that vehicle - then the answer is NO.
IMHO minimum size considered should be 9500 lb.

The rule of thumb that I use when deciding winch size is the all-up weight of the vehicle plus 50%.

With winches the bigger the better and a 9000lbs (4000Kg) would be the minimum I would go.

One other thing to consider is winches have different pulling power as the layers of cable increase, most winches have four or five layers of cable........ on the first layer you can pull 4000kg, on the second layer you can pull 3700kg, on the third layer you can pull 3400kg and on the fourth layer you can only pull 3200kg........ the other thing is line speed...... at 2000Kg you can pull at 11m per minute and at 4000Kg it's only just over 1m per minute.

These specs above are for the Warn XD9000i..... a popular winch amongst 4x4ers.

The other thing you have to consider is if you're going to have a trailer on and you need to pull that with the vehicle with the winch.

One last thing to think about is battery capacity of your vehicle and current (amps) usage of your winch.

Can I ask what you need your winch for as sometimes there are better options.

Thanks for the info. I have recently installed a bullbar with a winch facility after being bogged a few times and using a hand winch i thought an electric winch is a better option. Cheers gaz
