Hey fellas.....

Just wondering if anyone knows whether or not u can still get to the "Chimney at the old Mount Clara mine up near Kilkivan, Qld? I was there 3 or 4 yrs ago and there was some excellent scenery and forestry driving up and around there, but I heard mentioned that access was all closed by the local mine operators..... Does anyone know where this is true or not?

Here's a pic of the chimney:
Cheers..... RobM

I was able to drive up to it 12 months ago, while staying at the Kilkivan Bush Camp. Was a good road up with great scenery, especially as it was green from rain.

The Kilkivan Bush Camp.... Is that the same place as Rossmore Park along Rossmore Rd ??

What is the camping like up around these parts ?? Tent or Van or either? Would it be a good family spot as well?
Cheers..... RobM

Yes Rossmore Park & Kilkivan Bush Camp are one and the same.

It is suitable for vans & tents. See here : http://www.bushcamping.com.au/

RobM,
I hope it is open for you and as you say there are some really good forestry tracks up behind there.

I believe the road would be open at least to the stack. Wether the forestry or mining exploration has closed has closed it from there one you can only hope.

From an ex miner. Mining is locking up this country and I get wild about it.

Good to hear that there may be a good chance that its still open... I also hope that the surrounding Forestry roads are still open as there is some beautiful views and scenery up around there.... The area where all the blackboy grass trees are located is a sight to be seen....

If I ever get some time off, I might try and do a recce up that way.... but that will make it a BIG day's exploring from Brissie....

Rob, Yes it's still ok to get there. Our daughter lives a couple of k's dpwn the road and we are there quite often. There is roadworks in progress and water over the crossings but even a normal car will be ok. The landscape along the creek will have changed but it's still beautiful.
