We are about to leave Alice Springs. We had been told of the Calvert Road (Joe, Mel and Kids) but found they have left Domadgee. So my question is, what is the road currently like, suggesting camping spot along the way. Should we do it, or alternatively go to Boroloola and along, or to Mount Isa and up or do the track? We are new at the outback travel but enjoying what we have done so far.

Joe and the family are at the Big 4 in Alice at the moment.

They leave tomorrow morning for Uluru and WA.

A couple of years ago we drove from Booroola to Normanton via the Gulf road or Highway 1 road quite successful. Yes, there is gravel and not a great deal of corrugations, patches were quite dusty, but one can expect that! It was a spectacular drive and plenty of spots for overnight camping. It took us nearly a week to do the section, but well worth it. The wildlife was great and just on dusk the brolgas and blue wing kookaburra try to outdo each other with their similar calls. We drove a Ford Escape and a 15ft caravan - not off road one!
